Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Thank you! I think he's mighty handsome even as young as he is. He's very slow moving, though, and these birds range into the woods where the foxes like to linger around the edges of the meadow, so any given second they can do a snatch and grab before the dog can react...I've seen the chickens run like streaks from the woodline on numerous occasions and I know we have a grey fox in the area. Though none have been snatched, I don't want him to be the first.
i'd sure hesitate to free range with that kind of risk- mine do, but i have dogs ranging the property at all times-

Sounds like you have a good setup- he is a gorgeous boy and i know Cochin roos are very protective of their ladies, the more I have heard of them the more I like-

He's a very gentle breeder for one so young...I've seen that before but not often.
From what i have seen in my bantam cochins, that is typical of the breed- i would think the large fowl are the same

I thought it was more the bantams that get temperamental?

My bantam cochins are a bit more tempermental, not as laid back as the large fowl cochin i have had
Does anybody know where I could get hatching eggs? The color isn't important. I'm in Alabama. All I can find around be is bantam.
i ordered my first large fowl eggs from joyful sounds aviary http://www.joyfulsoundsfarm.com/
She has a waiting list for spring, she is also on facebook in case you are there too https://www.facebook.com/oklahomachasers?ref=br_tf#!/JoyfulSoundsFarm
She is in South Carolina. This is one of my girls from her eggs. I am sure others here will have suggestions too

Very pretty. I only have one that I got in a mix of pure breed eggs. She is wonderful. No idea what color she would be but so cute. Her chest is becoming more laced. SHe looks red with blue lacing. Still young.

Just an FYI I've lost 2 standard cochin hens to hawks so they can be targets. My whole yard is fenced in but I don't have any dogs.

That is a good warning- i tend to think these guys are too big, i need to rethink my new pen and run then... i have a mix of chickens that free range part of the day, seldom lose one- but i sure don't want to lose one of these guys!
