Large Fowl Cochin Thread

I just found out my little "blue" cockerel is from a "Lemon Blue" project! I'm excited to see how his color develops over the next year! He's only around 2-3 mo old now. Huge, with great foot feathering.

I didn't have my Standard of Perfection handy so I may have missed one or two but I think this is close. I have always wanted to make birchen large fowl cochins but after several attempts I gave that one up. I am working on browns and brown reds. The browns were once shown in very good quality by several breeders and about 30 years ago or so they went the way of the dinosaur. The genetics still exist so I am trying to find the combination. I am also working on Mottled which are a very striking variety, I have hatched about 100 of these this year.

Definitely putting mottled on my wish list. Also, I have see a couple of different things being referred to as Lemon blue. I do have a buff/ blue cross - is that what is referred to as lemon blue?

No, the lemon blue is derived from a cross of brown red X silver blue if I remember correctly. The old english and modern game breeders can correct me if I am wrong. Your little cross bred bird looks very nice though, it will be an eye catcher to anyone visiting your farm. Crossbreds are normally very pretty with their color combinations but can be used only for eggs and yard ornaments unless you have a plan behind the cross you are making.

The more I learn, the more I find there is to learn. The cross showed up out of a batch of 16 I got from a friend that got me started on the LF cochins.

I have a question regarding blue LF Cochins. At what age will it be apparent the amount of lacing they will have at maturity, if any? I ask because an extra egg slipped in with some GLCS hatched blue and I'm trying to decide whether to grow him out.

How are your mottleds and blacks looking? I have some dandies in both varieties, the mottleds are molting out and turning predominately black now, which is what I expect the first year. I wish judges understood this about mottled birds and took that into consideration when judging cockerels and pullets. Probably something that needs to be included in the SOP as a reference for judges. Counting down to the Large Mottled Cochin qualifying meet in three years!!!!

My Mottled and Blacks were moved outside yesterday and wing banded (they are also toe punched) . I love how they fill my hand when I pick them up. I seems that it is mostly the females that have the mottled feathers on their chests at this age. It looks like it is about 2/3s males to 1/3 females, but it will be a couple more weeks before I can be exact. In addition to this years hatch from you, I have 16 hatched from last years trio.

I am excited at the prospect of participating in a qualifying meet. I may have to enter a few locally as AOV in the meanwhile.

It would be nice to exhibit the younger birds, but I don't know if you can make an allowance for a potential color change. They are so nice that they could be exhibited as Blacks.

Any other variety, I believe.

This is the cockerel in question. He would have to be something exceptional to have a future beyond the freezer.
