Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Pics
I start around 6 months old, at this age I should have a handful of cochin and it should be difficult to reach from spine to breast bone if at all. Realize at 6 months they are very awkward looking and will continue to grow and fill out until they are 18 to 20 months or more.

Bo, Thank you for the advice on the cochin cockerels. Looks like the Splash roo is out of the breeding program. The others remain until they are older.
I personally liked the dark Blue roo # 2, the Black Roo #3, and then put the order 6, 5 and 4.
I had #4 last because of the long wing feathers even though I liked his color and type. Sounds like #4 may move up the line if those feathers aren't a problem.
I will definitely check the spine to keel measure. I know when I hold them, I can't reach around them with one hand...it takes two....I have a 7 inch span between tip of thumb to pinky tip.

Still looking for a LF blue or splash cochin rooster... or if you sell chicks may go that route.. looking for someone in the South East area, I go to rabbit shows so could possibly meet.. PM me if you have something!

Hi there everyone. I have 3 black LF cochin hens and 1 male. The male is about 2-3 years old (a guess) and is moulting and I noticed some white feathers underneath his hackles. The hens are all black with no visual white. Their chicks have white tipped leg and wing feathers. Is this normal for black chicks and should I be concerned about his white feathers? I really like their body type so I'm reluctant to sell them, but should I sell everything and start over or is this all normal?

Here's my website and some pictures of them. These were taken in July, before their moult.

I'd sure appreciate any advice you can give me!

With a VERY heavy heart I have to report that I lost all (7) 2 month old Langshan last night. To make matters worse, I really beleive it was my 5yr. German shephard that got them. None eaten, hole in fencing & pulled away.

I am beside myself & sick to my stomach. I was so excited about breeding these majestic birds & they were starting to grow out of the "ugly" stage & they were starting to really be friendly, not running away & letting me pick them up. Had them from a few days old. Probably will/want more but not now. Guess I'll wait until spring and start over. At least I know a great breeder here close by.

I know how you feel, but don't be to quick to judge your GS dog. I lot my roo this summer and thought it was my GS dog too. Long story short it was not - it turned out to be a red fox. If you look at the birds neck you might see really small bite holes. A fox will kill and come back later to take them away.

Well, I hope not a fox because means I won't sleep tonight. The reason we think our dog is because 1st - it sure looked like her hair around hole & fencing, 2nd - none eaten, 3rd- 4 were left in the pen, 2 outside in 1/4 acre fenced off garden area where the coops/runs are (but we've always left garden gate open so dogs can scare off other critters (????) and the other two were out in the fenced backyard where the dogs stay. Very few critters get in our backyard and make it out alive.

hehe and goofy mean I really meant to post this is the Langshan thread but thanks for the condolences.

Now I'm freaking out about a fox!!!!!! I have 3 other large walk-in pens that house another 30.
