Leghorns -19 weeks to first eggs

Pics
Tuesday bonanza 5 eggs. Total of 27 butt berries harvested. 1 brown and none of the other brown egg layers appear interested, so Red is still the only one. 2 dozen in 2 weeks. Wow. Glad I didn't buy eggs last trip. :)

3 in the official nest. 1 beside it and one in the other compartment. The light red girls are getting picked on more. Scabs on the combs. Not losing any feathers, so that is good. The leghorns are the leaders with the Barred Rocks in the mix and followed by all the red girls. Interesting to see how the dynamics are playing out. The reds are also the most immature. Tight pelvic bones and light pink combs.

The grass in the enclosure is slowly disappearing. Time to remake the boundaries.

Awesome, sounds like your flock is coming along nicely,

I am beginning to think that I might have more hens than I expected. I am sure I am in denial about this but three of my roos have such well developed saddles and tails, 1 ambigious one I'll call Pat, and two appear to have roo tails but no saddle or comb development as of yet. Oh sure I could go the easy route and see if TSC had poultry rings so I can mark em when they play aggressive roo games so I know for sure, but I prefer to eyeball and say roo or notroo.

So happy to hear your flock is doing so well I am curious though why you want to slaughter them when they are still good layers and then start over with a new flock. Is it because you bought dual purpose breeds and you want to explore other breeds? The thrill of a new project?

Oh and I found a breed of Vulturine Guinea I would love to own in Weatherford, Tx, that was until I read that their toes lose circulation in the 50F range and rot off. The breeder swears it is 32F for that but at $800-850 for a breeding pair I can wait and see how others fare at Temps under 50F. Beautiful plumage though I'm just not that into investing in tulips. https://www.meyerhatchery.com/productinfo.a5w?prodID=VGFS
wow hatchery wants 1600 for a pair.

Just wait before you know it you will have 100 eggs sitting in the fridge.

Yep. Ordered 25 chicks. Planned on eating 17 of them. Crazy Lady wanted leghorns, so we got 8 leghorns. Then the world found out we had chickens and wanted eggs. OK, I can adapt. Coop too small for 25 birds but 18 should (and is!) work. Yep, ordered dual purpose for the meat. Since this was my first attempt, convinced I would have high mortality. With a little help from my friends, all survived. Well, until butcher day.

The Cornish I'm talking about are for meat birds. The layers will still be here when the Cornish are baking. Knock together 3 chicken tractors and shuffle the Cornish through the yard in the spring.

Vulturine Guinea Fowl - Gorgeous! How do they taste? ;)
