Let’s Talk About Bird Flu

Like BDutch I´m also in Europe, other side of the border. At first I was scared that my chickens would get ill, but I don´t like them cooped up, even in their run. I´d rather they die as happy free range birds.. but I would lock them up if bird-flu was in the area, it´s the law here. So I have my run covered, and I have shoes just for the garden/chickens... and I don´t allow other people in the run... last time I did that I ended up with blood-mites in the coop, never had them before, never had them since.

Sorry Molpet. I have Long Covid too (brain, heart and POTS).

I believe the best thing to do with dead birds if you can’t deliver them to state autopsy facility is to bury them fairly deep.

H5N1 survives freezing temps and can last for 150 days in water so you’d want to avoid further spread. And protect yourself while disposing of them of course. Hopefully it won’t ever come to that.

I’m concerned at the number of wild birds and birds in within the food supply that are being lost due to this disease. 😓
Sorry you have LC too. I wish they would figure out a cure.

I have over 70 poultry , a lot to bury in ground that's frozen. Supposed to call the USDA and they take the bodies for incineration and kill the birds still alive , so it doesn't spread.
It's supposed to be 6 month quarantine after the USDA comes in and depopulate the flock. One farmer had his tractor in the poultry yard and it had to be disinfectant before he could take it out of the poultry yard.
Of course with the new administration I might be on my own for dealing with the bodies.

For a flock of hobby chickens just keep them away from areas with things like birdfeeders and waterfowl. Most of the strict biosecurity is mainly a thing for commercial farms (although stuff like having a pair of chicken boots and keeeping generally clean is a good idea)

They are cautious because in 1918 a lot of people died from a new strain of flu and they are making sure it doesn’t happen again. Granted a large chunk of that was the war going on so every country tied to hide that their populations were getting decimated.

They cull instead of letting the flock get the disease and the survivors getting natural immunity because having thousands of dying chickens increases the chances of animal to human contact and it is very hard to give the sick animals a high quality of life.

and about time too!

Edited to add, what may have been OK before H5N1 appeared and infected numerous poultry flocks seems at the very least reckless since it appeared. The same nutritional values can be obtained without putting potentially infected bird faeces and carcasses into a cow's feed.
What idiocy to put shit in feed! Apart from the bird flu that is spreading.

Haven’t farmers /the feed industry learned from Jacob Creuzfelt disease. Nasty things can happen if you let cows eat stuff that don’t belong in normal feed for plant eaters.
