Let’s Talk About Bird Flu

Pics
I’m from Ohio so this is bad news. It’s the most outbreaks in the us I think! Anyway there’s a county that’s poultry fair is shut down for bird flu! I hope my county isent! I worked so hard, but it may be a problem. Also did yall see that the first confirmed bird flu death happened in south Ohio?!? Wow! Any ideas on how to protect the flock over than netting on coop, no free ranging and chicken boots?

The first confirmed human death from avian flu in the United States occurred on January 6, 2025 in Louisiana. While the man was 65 years old and had some other health issues, few people are lucky enough to not live without some sort of health issue and the strain that sickened him was the same strain that made a Canadian teenager severely ill.
Today it is being reported that dairy cows, when tested, are being reinfected after their initial infections. Relevant because this can give the virus a mammal host to mutate within.

catch and release?
Usually if you remove a feral cats from a colony (relocate/euthanize), another will arrive "to take its spot" - & its often a pregnant female. Some one is feeding these cats or making it very easy for them to stay around.

I work at a spay neuter clinic. We had 5 County ACs & 3 regular "feral cat" groups (others in/out but not as well funded). LOTS of TNR. 52 Tom's neutered last week in one (extra - usually closed on Fridays) day. When cats deemed sick, they are tested & often treated w/ long acting antibiotic injection. Not free but at a VERY reduced cost. Not sure if colonies are currently tracked by CDC or Gov...

I have been out of clinic since broke/dislocated my ankle LAST Feb 23rd. Complications w/ health & healing - no driving.. But I've somewhat kept up w/ them. Over years, we've adopted 11 feral cats. 1 remained feral, 13 yrs old this yr. Several have dissapeared - 2 months to 4 yrs after spay/neuter. 4 now in/out cats. 5th has disappeared last week - either dinner for new local coyote or coy dog pack or caught in neighbors' traps. We've had two feral cats poisoned & a 3rd got into rats poison behind our fridge while moving... currently have 4 in/out cats (2 very aloof, don't want/like to be handled) that started in feral colonies.

I think you're right and it might be the people who live directly behind us as once in a while I will here a voice saying "here, kitty kitty".
Not on speaking terms so a pleasant conversation is out of the question. They are very passive aggressive - not our kind of folk.
Yet one more reason why NOT to have neighbors.
