We average in around $3.38 a gallon here in Southeast Idaho ~ thankfully, since we are self-employed, & Wood Genius works out of our garage, we have very low gas costs. That does not stop us from growing a huge garden this year, raising some chickens ( 1st time ever,, but we feel like it's something we have to do), and cooking from scratch. And I mean really from scratch. ( but not chicken-scratch
)
The cost of wheat & flour has gone up ridiculously as well, largely due to the whole corn-ethanol issue. Two weeks ago, I could get a 50lb bag of flour for $10.89, now, it is up to $25!!! And white hard wheat used to be around $3 a 50lb bag, now it's up to $12.25 straight from the farmer, and $18 from the stores!!!
With all that said, though, I agree with Cassandra as well, I choose to NOT buy gas ~ as much. We walk and ride our bikes as much as possible. We consolidate our grocery store/errand trips to once or twice a month, and we don't eat out. Since I homeschool, we still do go on field trips & have outings & activities, but I plan better, and we try to hit several birds with the same stone while we are out and about. We even heat with a wood stove, which we fuel with wood scraps from the business as well as wood culled from our local dump. ( I have re-named that dump-diving wood-collecting activity, however, I now call it *re-claiming, recycling, being GREEN*. lol, sounds so much more sophisticated that way
)
Now if only we could figure out a way to power our vehicles with chicken manure!! It powers our gardens, why not a car? :-D
