I had a duck egg pip days before it should have so I threw the bator into lockdown- goose egg too and candled it to check on it. I just don't see any movement and the egg was cooler to the touch than the others. I don't know if that means anything. I am so sad if so. I left the egg in there for now though- it's not supposed to hatch until the 20th. This was the only one of 6 eggs that made it that far. My goose has laid a few more eggs and once this hatch is over I will try one more time- maybe. But I know some one local that has some lovely Africans so I might just contact her. Geese for us are truly pets- not livestock like our ducks and chickens so losing the eggs after they were alive at some point as been very heartbreaking. What a softie! LOL
My little gosling is alive!!!!!! He is doing good. He is having some balance issues. Looks like he will be a special needs gosling. I will have to make him a doughnut hole towel to prop him up. The good thing about today is that another hatched, so he has a sibling to keep him company. Perfect timing!
FINALLY! I've been sick for about a week and haven't been on here....you guys have been busy!!! I finally read all the posts I was behind on...congrats to everyone with new babies and so sorry to the ones who have lost babies. Trust me, I feel your pain and enjoyment. This gosling hatching biz is a bumpy ride, huh!?!
Here's my update...I had two due to hatch since I was last online...the first one never made it to internal pipping and when I did the eggtopsy, I found a sweet little buff gosling inside but to my surprise, her intestines were on the outside of her body so something clearly went wrong in the process...In this instance, I'm glad she didn't actually make it to hatch and that she died peacefully in her shell. My second baby was another absolutely beautiful buff dewlap! She pipped at the wrong spot but she's since made it out and she's doing great!
This brings my total up to THREE! Not very good out of eight full term eggs but I have to remind myself to be grateful for the living and not focus on the bad. I still have several eggs in the bator but have decided that whatever else the girls lay, I'm going to let them have. Gertrude especially wants to be a mommy so I'm giving her what she wants. I figure after all the eggs she's given me this season, it's the least I can do! She's already given me over twenty eggs and is still laying! She's such a great goose! I'll post pics of the babies asap.
I hatched off a white chinese at work 2 weeks ago. He thinks he is a human and that I am his mom. He will follow me everywhere when I let him out. It is too funny.
*Love* to hear this, KG!! So happy for you! Go goosey go!Thank you. He is doing so much better this morning. I put him in a doughnut hole (towel) yesterday evening and last night. He and his sibling snuggled up last night and slept together. By him remaining still and calm last night, he was able to get more balance and get stronger. This morning he was out of the towel and walking around the brooder. There is hope for this little guy. I'm so happy that he will make it. I was worried all night long.
Temp is 37.2 and we are trying to keep the humidity between 30%- 50% (closer to 50% though). So far so good though you are a little over and will reach a target loss of around 15% around 21 days. What temperature and humidity are you at?
