Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

Hi all.....I am new here, and have used a lot of your great information to help me with my first goslings! I started 5 eggs, one was infertile and the other 4 have progressed along just as textbook to what everyone says they should be looking like. I have read Pete's guide so often I pretty much have committed it to memory! My first baby hatched this morning with no issues at all.... The second baby had externally pipped this morning and then did not progress for hours. she had a fairly large hole, but was not unzipping.... No yolk sac or blood vessels, so I opted to help a little ... I found that she was a sticky chick and her membrane had dried like glue. I had read about this so I increased my humidity for the others and gently helped her out by moistening the 'cement' with a qtip and warm water... After about an hour she finally pushed her way free. She had some spots on her that were still stiff and after a few hrs I tried to clean some of them up with warm water and qtip again..... She is pretty feisty, but has not fluffed up like the first one.... Should I work harder to remove the remnants of the glued membrane, or would it be best to let her be for a while. Also.... Another question....how long should I keep them in the incubator before transferring to the brooder? They are still wobbly, but quite vocal.....I have a third egg that has internally pipped and a 4th that I am not seeing too much, but still hopeful...thanks for any feedback! These are Chinese geese.

Hey there and congratulations on your new additions. They look very healthy and foster mum has done a good job

Iain
Congratulations on your 1st Dewlap this season - woo hoo. So it a big gosling and I take it a Grey as you said a Boy??

Our 2nd Dewlap egg is just starting rotation and from candling I can see the yolk sac and blood vessels are all absorbed so we're ready for action!!!

Like you we've got a 50% chance of a Buff (male or female). I keep looking for the beak coming through so I can see the colour. Think I'll go and have a glass of wine and try to avoid looking for a while

Thanks!! Yes, sir... boy = grey. My next dewlap egg just externally pipped with the other one not far behind.

CONGRATS on your 2nd egg.

for a buff!!

Here are a couple pics of the new pair. Crazy to think the little African hatched out a few hours before the dewlap. Look at the size difference!

Not good at all. I went down to check on them a couple hours later, right before bed, and one gosling was dead under mama. I took the othes back inside. The problem is my geese don't know how to differentiate between goslings and eggs, so they plop down on the babies the same as they do on eggs. Is it normal for mama geese to accidentally crush a baby? how about three? Could this just be a first time thing? so much for letting "nature take its course".

Oh no!

So sorry!! I have a broody goose with 3 eggs scheduled to hatch in 2-3 days.

they hatch ok and momma takes good care of them!

Congrads J and Pete on your dewlap goslings. I hope for the both of you to get BUFFS!!!!

Everyone else congrads on your new goslings as well.

Sorry for those of you have problems with goslings I hope you will have better luck on the next hatchings...

Samantha our White sebbie curly breasted none of her eggs hatched. I do believe they were older eggs that she went broody on. Had to kick her off the nest today and let her get a bath for one of the eggs exploded on her and boy was my beautiful white girl and muddy stinky mess from being on the nest so long. I feel bad for Samantha. She wants back into the nest but can not let her. She is one of those females who will sit until she dies to hatch the eggs!!! So we have to intervine.
NO white this year from Samantha...

Thank you!! Very sorry to hear about Samantha.

Congrats on the new babies and best of luck with the ones still to hatch! As for sticky stuff on hatchlings, it depends on how bad it is bugging me. Sometimes I give the baby a very quick warm bath, towel off and put under heat lamp. Sometimes I use a wet paper towel to wipe it off. Oftentimes I leave it alone. As for how long to keep in bator, again it depends. If they pop out ready to run around, only a few hours. For more challenging hatches, up to 24 hours.

After conversation with RiverGoddess (many thanks for sharing all your information about your Petersime Incubator)

I decided on a new Brinsea so I'll enjoy setting that all up when it arrives.

I really hope you like your new bator! THX for the overwhelming flattery!

Here's new baby and apologies for odd colour of the picture but under red lamp at present.

My dewlap has made it out of the shell..... and it's a big boy! Getting my post hatcher box warmed up so I can move them over as soon as possible, because my next two dewlap eggs are ready for lockdown.

Baby died. He tried so hard and was such a sweet little thing. I only had him for 28 hours but he sure burrowed into my heart quick. I'll miss him. His siblings are peeping for him. I've done cried my eyes out but i know hes not suffering anymore.

Good morning! I'm in love with my new pair of goslings.

I am also so excited that my next pair of dewlap eggs have both externally pipped and should hatch late tonight.

they hatch healthy and at least one is buff!

8geese, very sorry about your baby. :(

RG, where are pics of your new hatchlings???

Thank you both for the kind words. The situation has gotten worse though. I lost another one this morning, it was fine bouncing around then all of a sudden got weak. 20 minutes later it died in my hands. Now i have one very unhappy, clingy gosling left. I gave him a stuffed pig. Hopefully something will come out of the three eggs that is due this thursday.
