When I went to horse pasture to feed this morning, I saw one of my white African girls was not in group. So, knowing she shares a nest with my broody brown African, Peanut, I headed over to make sure she was there. Sure enough, my white African was there..... but it was not a pretty sight. Sometime last night, a mink (I think) killed Peanut. Snow must have gone to nest this morning to lay her scheduled egg and found Peanut. She stayed on nest, trying to protect Peanut's dead body and the eggs. I forced her off and destroyed the remains of the nest and a trap is now there in its place.
Peanut was one of my favorites and I worried sick about her brooding in the pasture. She had less than a week left before her eggs would have hatched (a few are in my bator now). RIP pretty girl.
