Believe me, I check vents, necks, backs, cracks and crevices on the regular (like several times per week) . I feel like if I had an infestation there's no way I wouldn't know. BUT, seeing that singular bug on that singular egg had me questioning all of my life choices.

Mites leave traces on birds especially if there is an infestation. So if you aren't seeing anything unusual on the skin or feathers, it was probably just a random bug. Mites are everywhere in nature, wild birds carry them too, so I am sure this bug was not a product of your chicken keeping practices.
