Looking for old recipe - it was called "Family Pie"

I'm actually afraid to make that cake!

I try to eat next to nothing for a few weeks before Thanksgiving.

That's how my In-laws make it. They use a can of cherry pie filling mixed with pineapple pieces. It's got a slight tang to it. Mouth watering just thinking of it.... It's really not something to make healthier though. I tried to use lower sugar pie filling. UGH!

I use fresh or quick-frozen fruit and Xylitol instead of sugar.

I wonder what it would be like with veggie oil in place of the butter?

sounds alot like my great grandmother Fruit Pudding. Keep in mind these measurements are with coffee cups and kitchen spoons.

1C flour
1/2 C sugar
walnut sized lump of butter
1/2 C milk
1 tsp baking powder
1 C fresh or canned fruit
mix first 5 ingredients into a dough, pour into greased 8" or 9" square baking pan, sprinkle fruit on dough, sprinkle on 1/2 C sugar and pour 1/2 C boiling water on top and a lump of butter on top. Bake 350 for 35 minutes.

Because its such an old recipe it can be tricky but the fruit sinks and the bottom becomes melted sugary goodness. We use apples, peaches, blueberries, etc.

The thing I liked about "Family Pie" is that you simply dump the ingredients into a big bowl and bake. No 'mixing' needed, just melt the butter and boil the water. I suppose you could use hot tap water and room-temp butter if you didn't want to take that extra time!

lol if I can make it, you can too. It's not hard, not messy. It's yum-dilly-yumptious!
I make a lot of mistakes in the kitchen, but I call them experiments. If I have a recipe for it, I know it's good. Now if I tell you that I've made something up or if I say, I think..that's when to be afraid!

I hear ya-I am doing the same thing. Lots of salad and low fat recipes for me. I am making lists of all the goodies I want to make for the holidays. Makes me feel better when I can't eat them. From Thanksgiving to New Years it is pretty much a munch fest at our house.

The Neiman Marcus cake is a lot like the Gooey Butter Cake recipe from Paula Dean. It is ultra yummy and great if you add a package of the Health bar peices to the top layer. (me drooling here-there needs to be a drooling smiley)
