"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Thank you! :)

That's good advice to practice. I will research dry hatch. I may not get a chance to practice. I really don't want to wait. Guess we'll find out in a month or so if there will be eggs available.
I got a reply from XW ranch on the barred rocks. In Spring, 50$ a dozen for the eggs plus shipping, 10$ a chick.
I want to hear something on the Dorkings before I commit to the rocks.

By the way I've been wanting to thank you again for the suggestion on the Ussary book " The Small Scale Poultry Flock". It's got great info. I've learned a lot. Right up my alley.

Thanks again Linda.

Cody
As far as I can remember, XW Barrs are just about the best in the country. Research his thread Weaver Rocks. They go back to a very famous line.

Edited to add: I checked and found some pictures of the XW Barrs. Post #10

I checked these out when you mentioned them the other day. The most beautiful barred rocks i've seen. I emailed him about puting a deposit on them for eggs. I didn't hear back yet. His barred Rocks make my hatchery badded Rock look like a differeny breed. They are lovely! Never seen a barred rock so beautiful.

Where you looking for New Hampshire Reds. Their is a guy in this state that has top quality birds. Pam

Hey Pam, you are talking about Jeff right? He's not got any right now. I wanted to get some months ago but he doesn't ship I think. He talked about shipping them by a friend that works in Shreveport. He has the good German line. Just NH. Not the reds. That's the hatchery cross to get a better egg production.

I've got another link for you to look at. The first 6 pages are amazing but post #60 is the one that tells the background of Ken Weavers Barred Rocks. Absolutely amazing. Over 120 years documented.

I just had a 30 egg day, at least 1 new layer,1st white egg, so now i know i have at least 2 white leghorns, white rocks lay brown eggs, i also had good results from my cholessteraal tests, 42 good 88 bad, ratio was 3.3, this is really good for my age and eating habits, my best results in the 6 years of testing, i attribute the good news to eating ll these home grown eggs, thats the only changes i have made to my diet in the last year, med is the same, it has got to be them good ole backyard eggs

I had 3 Brown Leghorns that would lay me a nice medium to large egg about every day. I didn't keep them, they were so mean. They were not only mean to any chicken I brought into the flock. They were mean to each other. I have never had any chickens like them since. Great layers but rotten personalities. You may have nice ones but mine were rotten.

Also topdog, congrats on all the eggs. I got 4 for the longest time and now I'm up to 7 and that's not consistent. My chickens haven't been laying that long and they started real late but once they did they usually lay me an egg every day. I have four red sex-links that lay every day, rarely miss a day. They lay really pretty golden brown eggs.

I looked at the guy in nebraska he ships and wants a deposit they ship in the spring. The NH he has took home first place in the show in baton rouge this year. I'm not positive But I think He has RIR's too but hasn't mixed them. Do you remember Chris? I don't remember if you were a member when was was on regularly. He used to pop in regularly till he had a disgreement with someone then I think he had enough. I don't blame him it was a dumb disagreement. Pam

:welcome Welcome to the La-yers. I don't like breeds that are mean. Give me the easy going birds anyday. Pam

Do you know if Cackle joy is selling hatching eggs at the present?
I looked at the XW Ranch barred rocks. Very nice looking birds. I will message them.

Thank you for the info. Will definitely get back with you on this.

Cody

Linda the ones from this ranch. Fell in love with these beauties. Waiting to hear how he wants the deposit. Pam

Hi everyone! Busy week here. My baby just turned one, husband's family is in town from Florida, and I've been SUPER busy with my yarn. I was juuuuust about to catch up, then I got another order haha. That's definitely not a complaint. I love making things.

I've recently gotten into tea and I have become obsessed. Next spring I will be growing my own green tea and chamomile. Possibly also some lemon balm and mint. I've been spending a ton of time researching it lately, and have been experimenting with different brands.

My chickens love their new house now. It took a little time for them to get used to it. We originally had a board in there for a roost, but they refused to use it. Several nights in a row, they tried to go to sleep outside in the run on the big branch. Instead of inside of their house. We finally went into the woods near our house and pulled out a big branch. That night they went into their house without any complaints! We've been getting one egg per day from our RIR, Ariel. Our White Leghorn, Rapunzel, should start laying any time now. My husband gets the biggest kick out of what he calls their "football squats." It certainly makes it much easier to catch them!!!

And my mystery meal maker (Belle) does appear to be a Partridge Plymouth Rock. It has been confusing, because our EE (Rainbow) looks EXACTLY like her. The only difference is the leg color. My EE has green legs.

Our Dominique (Dottie) is sweet as ever. Very affectionate. You would never guess that she had leg problems as a chick.

That's my little recap. Goodnight, everyone! This chamomile tea is doing it's job!
