Started with a Rhode Island Red and a smaller breed bird for eggs, acquired 5 australorps and now want to move into a good heritage breed for meat eating, which led me to this forum!!! We had 8 but due to some mishaps we have 5 now. We raised two pigs last year for meat and are picking up our 2 new pigs as we dont want to run out of that unbelievable tasting meat. We are currently in the begining stage of building a walipini on our sloped yard for organic food growing. Some of our future plans include building a outdoor clay oven, building a water distiller and whatever else sounds interesting. I have 2 homeschooled boys so it's my desire to teach them how to do for themselves.

Welcome to Backyard chickens!
Although getting a heritage dual purpose breed sounds good, the feed conversion for meat is not very good and the hens do not lay as many eggs as egg laying breeds.

I would suggest getting a good egg laying breed for eggs and raise Cornish cross for the meat. That way you can feed them economically and if you hatch chicks for the egg layers, you will be able to process the cockerels

You could also try red rangers for meat. You process both the males and females for them like the Cornish Cross
