Luikse Vechter aka Liege Fighter Thread

My experience is the hens are almost entirely black, with possibly penguin faces or a touch of color on the head only. But my roosters are all black/gold or black birchen. I don’t have experience with the many other color varieties. If you look back in the thread, at least 7 of those in the pic were roosters. The all black were hens.

I would have pegged yours as a hen based on the color, comb and shape.

Thanks! Lol, I had ‘her’ pegged as a hen too… up until recently. I have a couple of splashes that might illustrate this best, but with many breeds the males have later tail development and have the single back stripe of feathers for some time. I have 2 with longer tails that got full back feathers and 1 with a quite short tail that had the back feather stripe- so I would say 2 girls and a boy. However this ‘blue’ one had fast, long tail growth and full back feathering so I had been calling it a girl up until recently so now I’m wondering in general if the gender generalizations apply with LV

Also- now that I ‘accidentally’ ended up with this many, I have extras… I’m not sure if I’m local to anyone (Ohio) or if you would want to make arrangements- but I have extra cockerels in every color lol. Namely there is a second one who looks just like this blue one that is next oldest. These ones were chicks from GFF, a little older than the ones that hatched. Cockerel anyone? Blue? Black? Splash?

Hah, roosters are so unloved. I’m finally down to four roosters and still looking to re-home one more, plus I have a bunch of Indio gigante and liege at 4 weeks and 8 weeks, and don’t know what I’ve got. I managed to sell 5 4 week chicks last week, but I still have an abundance of chickens.

Ah yes, well, I’m pretty sure I’ll have to pick and choose on the Lieges- I don’t think I can keep 6 or 7 Liege Roos 😂. And also my ratios this year were all like 6:1 males to females… I mean like really bad…. So yes lots and lots of extra boys.

Hey guys! I currently have 3 liege fighter chickens, (2 roosters, 1 pullet). I was wondering if anybody has any idea why my pullet stopped laying? It was laying normal and then stopped laying for weeks. They are in a big space. Do you have any ideas? Experiences?

They go off lay pretty quick when stressed or unhappy. I’ve found mine are better layers than people say, but get them unhappy and they stop until a few days to a week after they feel better. It strikes me that unless you have other hens, she’s getting over bred. With 2 roo and 1 hen, I’m surprised anyone has feathers left

Hello, I just hatched out some Liege and Bruges today. Don't have any photos yet and it's night time, their banty mommas wouldn't want to be disturbed. Of the lieges, one is black, one is blue and one is a bright solid yellow. The Bruges are black with some small yellow places if I remember correctly. Still have one hen on a Bruges egg and one liege egg developing in my incubator along with some Wahl Asils, Sumatras and a few of my own American game line. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Here are the little guys. Actually there are 2 blue 1 yellow, one is just darker.

I have questions for the experts on SOP - so this guy… he is blue, do you think he will grow into silver neck or gold neck? (It’s kind of hard to tell) He is in the sunlight, but is his eye color too light? Also his middle toe nail is not horn color, but light, is that DQ worthy?
