for all of them to hatch! Laree thanks for the hint on the turkey poults since it all six eggs that lotsapaints sent to me have made it into lockdown. I saw movement in five of them and the sixth looks really good too. The only egg I am wondering about is one of CC's C pen eggs. I left it in but I think it might be a late quitter. It doesn't smell so I put it back in. DH cracks me up. He is even learning the chicken "lingo". He asked me yesterday if the eggs were in lockdown already!

Laree I am really hoping we get out of work early enough to get to the post office today so I can send out your prize. I just wanted to let you know that I haven't sent it yet since we got home the past couple of days after it was closed.

Mahonri, Congrats on the "early bird" and hoping you get good news on your MRI this morning.

I got a new higher lumen flashlight and checked my eggs for the first time last night before bed. Tossed two from the Javas, one non-starter and one early quitter, and one Icelandic, early quitter. That means I will lockdown 24 eggs tonight, 8 Icelandic and 16 Java (a couple of these are crosses from a SLW pullet in with the two Java girls and roo). Being my first time incubating, I'm going to be a nervous wreck until this is over...good thing I have a lot on the calendar to do..now if the weather would just cooperate so I can get outside to do it!!

I have a funny story for y'all.

So I've been stalking a groundhog for the past 2 years... it's been eating my garden (despite fences). It's managed to be incredibly sly and doesn't ever offer me a good clear shot at it, or when it does it's on high alert and the second I get outside it bails.

So I bought traps last fall. The groundhog ignored them. I figured I'd be smarter this year, put them out early when there wasn't a lot of food available.

I saw the groundhog for the first time 2 days ago, so I put the traps out. Baited them with half an apple and a carrot each.

Got home from work yesterday in the afternoon to discover I had caught the neighbors cat. Released it, reset the trap.

Now here's the really important part of the story: I was on call last night - and boy, what a busy night. I couldn't have gotten more than 30 minutes of sleep. So I'm half dead, trying to eat some breakfast and drink some tea and boyfriend comes over and says, your trap is sprung but I can't tell if anything's in it (it was still mostly dark here). So I go outside and walk very slowly until I can see the trap (I usually catch skunks so caution is very important). I see the trap is really shaking and there's a tannish grey cat in there. The cat is super angry and flailing around in the cage so I can't get a really good look, but it did stop for a second and I got a decent look at its face and confirmed it was a cat. So I go up to the trap, without gloves, and put my hands in there and release the catch. The cat springs out of there and flies across my yard to the woods. I thought, hmm... weird looking cat, fairly large, didn't have a tail. End of (tired) thought process.

Walk back into the house and see boyfriend standing there, horrified. He looks at me and says, "You know you just released a bobcat?"

th.gif

Yup, you are half tired/dead.

If you are going to release a bobcat, you do it 75 to 100 miles away from home. Preferably in a zoo somewhere.

I read through the contests. No first chick hatched contest there. That was back in the NYD Hatch..... I think

It's contest number 6.

I might be half dead but I can still read. I think. I just can't identify predators.
