Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Ok, incubators are scrubbed and disinfected. Humidity pump is sanitized and primed. Auto-turner is working. Temperature is stabile at 99.5 on the Spot Check thermometer. Brinsea Advance is set at 101.5 because it is broken and that's where the temp has to be set at to actually be 99.5. The Brinsea ECO is cleaned, disinfected, tested and ready to be used for hatching. I plan to split the barred cochins into two incubators for hatching so I wlll know who is who. Baby brooder is cleaned and lined with fresh shelf-liner, ready for new babies! Cabinets are stocked with starter food, red marbles, polyvisol, etc. I wonder if I should put a cover on that electric plug? Hubby considers those "optional."

Eggs are in the tray, fat end up and ready to go at 1200 hours tomorrow. I am psyched!

Now you need to guess the breed of the first three hatched... (for tie breaker purposes)

And what breeds do you have in those 82 eggs??

ETA: Never mind.....I saw it posted after I asked this!!

It's ok. They are thinking small. I only have 17 set. But I have a reason - flock rebuilding. And NO I am never gonna get over that massacre.

Oh, you have to guess that, too.

Just kidding ..... sorry, had to do that.

Mary,
My Brinsea Advance is calibrated wrong too. I lost almost all of my first hatch in it because I assumed it would be right. Then after a disasterous first hatch, I checked it with the Spot-check, and it was off by about 1.5 degrees. I was so mad. I had over 200.00 dollars worth of eggs in that thing, and only got 5 chicks, all had to be helped out. Anyway, now I haveto run it at 100.5 and keep checking it with the Spot-check.

I am curious as to how the humidity pump works. Is it just an aquarium hose that runs into the bottom of the 'bator? I was thinking of drilling a small hole in mine and running some aquarium hose into the bottom to add water. Is there something in the bottom of the bator to add moisture-like pads or sponges?

Would appreciate your input.....Thanks

I can empathize with you there. A neighbor's dogs got loose and came over and killed 17 of my hens and maimed a few more almost a year ago, after their other dogs had gotten out and killed 11. I have ZERO tolerance for their dogs anywhere near my yard at this point. My chickens only get to free range now when I'm home normally. Never get to be out all day when I'm gone anymore.
