Excuse me...it's 11 eggs, not 10!

I can empathize with you there. A neighbor's dogs got loose and came over and killed 17 of my hens and maimed a few more almost a year ago, after their other dogs had gotten out and killed 11. I have ZERO tolerance for their dogs anywhere near my yard at this point. My chickens only get to free range now when I'm home normally. Never get to be out all day when I'm gone anymore.

Thank you! We lost 24 chickens and 9 ducks. I have 13 chicks in the brooder, and 17 ducks eggs set to hatch 1/1/11 - the chicken math has to come into play here with the ducks.

Oh, well then ...... okay.

I have five acres, but even though I paid for it, I can't use it for more chickens. My stupid neighbors get to let their dogs run loose on it. My chickens have to be locked up in a secured coop and covered run. This Jack Russell terrier is one of a pack of three that run loose. Here he is right out my window going to the coop to see if the gate is unlocked! If I let my chickens out or don't get the lock perfect every time it will be mass murder here. I am so sick of it. I never dreamed I would buy this much property and not get to use it! I am jealous of those who can have chickens and let them free range. In many ways I was better off on my fenced half acre.

I hate these animals and their irresponsible, negligent, ignorant owners! Sorry to hijack the thread for venting but I had to get it out! I am very frustrated.

OK.......I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be! First time incubating for me, and I just hope that my thermometers/hygrometers are close to accurate and I don't mess things up too badly. I will be happy if ANY eggs hatch!!

So, I am setting 14 eggs tomorrow. These are all from my own backyard flock, and will mostly be mutt chickens. I have a pretty EE rooster over several different breeds of hens/pullets. Almost all of the eggs are pullet eggs, with most of those being the 'firsts' laid just this week. I'm sure that's not going to help my hatchability either. But I'm really hoping, and excited to see if any of those brand new eggs hatch.

So here they are in order of collection:

And here they are laid out by breed:

4 Mottled Javas (from 2 pullets)
5 EE's (from blue pullet)
3 Cuckoo Marans (eggs aren't dark at all......kind of sad about that)
1 SLW (from hen)
1 Black Star (from hen) - she's at the end of her laying cycle and is giving us very large, but kind of 'odd' eggs. Hubby wanted this one in the bator "just to see if it will hatch"! Even he's getting into it!!! LOL

For the Mahonri's Hatch Contest:
Number that will hatch (I asked hubby to guess, so here it is): 62
1st three breeds: Mottled Java, Icelandic, Lavendar Orp

Bring on the Hatch-A-Thon!!!

(Do I start worrying NOW??? Or wait until tomorrow......)
