Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Mahonri, no, I didn't know that. He sure is gorgeous. And so friendly. I tried to put him out with everybody when I let them out to forage today, had to break up the beginnings of the first fight, and when another roo came over Jayne jumped back into my arms and buried his head in my armpit.

I'll have to make note of his breed. I have him in with 3 other Ameracauna, EE type hens.

I have probably 30 or more roos that all live together with my hens, and everyone gets along. I tried to introduce a new one the end of last week and it really upset the applecart. I had to put him in his own cage for his and everyone else' protection. I put 3 hens in with him to keep him happy. Got him From AzKat and he's gorgeous and very tame, but made a mess of the pecking order. It took about 3 days for them to sort it back out after I put him in seclusion. So I'm just suggesting that you can possibly grow roos without them fighting, once they get the pecking order straightened out.

Yup, I'm planing on a bachelor pad for grow out.

I'll be growing out culls so don't want them mixing with the girls.

HeatherB was asking about it in regards to keeping a roo that she didn't want breeding but would like to keep as a pet in a shared pen.
EDIT to add: I need to make sure not to make pets out of my growing dinners or DH will NOT be happy with me!

Mahonri, watched The Sing Off for the frst time tonight. They are pretty talented. I didn't agree with who the judges kicked off, but it was very enjoyable nonetheless.

RareBreed, they need to come up with an UGLY and MEAN breed so that you don't get attached to them, make it easier to butcher.

So here is my question: Who here is keeping what they hatch...or more to the point, who here is NOT KEEPING all of what they hatch? What are all of you doing with your new babies when they arrive? Just curious since perhaps I might be looking for certain chicks that are local(ish) that I could buy.
So tell me what your plans are for your chicks?

While I officially blame Mahonri for causing me to attempt to hatch chicks and raise them in the middle of winter

; I guess I should confess that I already had two breeding pens established and was waiting for the pens to purify then show me some fertile eggs

. I'm trying to develope a larger , Cornish bodied , dual purpose , blue/green egg layer off my CX crossed on Ameraucana and EE for a self sustaining flock . The Speckled Sussex and Gold Laced Wyandottes were added to the pens just in case I got no fertile eggs off the CX crosses , plus the colorful EE chicks the F2s should produce ; but planning on selling most of those chicks come spring . The CX crosses are staying as breeding stock with culls for the table . I figured what I ever got [ God willing I hatch any ] will be enough to have to care for this winter so I dismantled my breeding pens on the 10th . Today I bought a show quality Dark Cornish cockeral [ probably two actually ] over the phone to go pick up Sunday ; and now thinking hard about putting a breeding pen back up . I think I need a smilie that symbolizes gone crazy .
edt for the one spelling error I saw and couldn't live with

When Jayne was little, he looked just like all of the other Wheaten Ameraucana roos. His daddy is my SQ Blue Wheaten Am. roo and his mama is a big wheaten hen, also out of Jean Ribbeck stock. She says you'll get a rare anomaly like that every now and again. I had a couple of folks PM to ask if I had ever gotten a Golden Duckwing with muffs and beard. If I do, I'll be starting a new project... to breed Golden Duckwing Ameraucanas. If Jayne would have had muffs and beard I would have bought him back from AzKat... So when those little w/bws grow up that you hatched out with my eggs, you could put them with Jayne to see what you get. Like I said, he came out of a very blue egg.
I think that somewhere way back in my roo's ancestry was a Salmon Faverolle or an OEG Golden Duckwing.

SteveH... so happy to take the blame for thousands of chicks being hatched on 1/1/11

We hatched out a bunch last year... but no where near as many as this year.

If I have more than 40 chicks I'll either have to make a bigger brooder or something I'm trying to think how I can do it on the back porch so in case it rains. Last year I was throwing boards over my big brooder box when it rained and it was a mess.

... of course we have that luxury down here where it rarely gets below 40 at night. We've had recored highs here the last three days in a row. I was wishing I had planted a winter garden. At this point I won't plant until the end of January and I'll be harvesting April through June. Next year I'm planting the last week of August so I can harvest in Nov-Dec.

Icelandic eggs are white and it is really easy to see by day three or four if anything is developing. I feel very comfortable tossing them at that point.

But, WooHoo on the 54% Mahonri. That the best anyone has done with these more recent eggs! I am collecting for henhouse Bob right now then quitting until things improve, probably in the Spring.

In an exceptionally mild winter here , first you would have to chip through 6 inches of frozen ground
