Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

And you're counting every one.

Kathy your rocks are gorgeous! Just goes to show you the difference between hatchery and true heritage breeder stock.

Mahonri, so glad to hear that you are feeling better and that your turner is working again without the stacked overload! Laree, they do grow out of the Chippendales mode. I have reserved a pic of my son actually stuck on the commode when he was about four or five for future blackmail purposes

He is now 17 and I think the day is coming that I will need that pic! DH made some adjustments to the "redneck" candler yesterday and it is much easier to see if things are developing. I still can not see veining but it does look like some are developing (not sure if it is my inexperience at candling or just the fact that all of my eggs are either brown or green) so not going to get rid of any of them until candling at day 18. Just don't trust what I am seeing enough to say one is good or not developing at this point. The thing that worries me the most is that I will wind up with only one chick and nowhere else to get another since who would be crazy enough to hatch chicks in December in Utah??!!

Mahonri, just noticed your signature. How true, you do not have to shovel sunshine. I had to shovel about four inches of snow out of the chicken's pen yesterday morning. I am soooooo missing living in AZ. If I am a good girl, hopefully I will get to move back there some day.

Well, I candled out 5 eggs today - no development and one had a big ol crack in the bottom. Cracked them to be sure and definitely duds. I think my hatch rate is going to be pretty poor, but these are shipped eggs in winter so I guess I should be happy that ANY are developing. I have 12/24 that have development and the other 7 are 'iffy' and will wait to toss those for another week. I just hope I get two out of this - I'd hate to have a lone lil chickie.

When Jayne was little, he looked just like all of the other Wheaten Ameraucana roos. .

Boy oh boy ..... I sure missed something in this story .... Jayne is a male?

All good science fiction nerds know that AZCat named th roo JAYNE after the character Jayne in the series Firefly/ The movie was Serenity. There is a whole episode dedicated to Jayne, called "A Man Named Jayne" (in honor of Johnny Cash).

There is a song and everything.

My poor little broody ... It's my first broody ... and I'm trying not to worry about her eating and drinking, but I haven't seen her budge since day 1 ... (of course I'm not there all day) ...

OK can't help myself. Had to play with the candler some more and wear DH's reading glasses to see better. I am refusing to get bifocals for as long as I can. I have been nearsighted since my first pregnancy but trying to deny that I am getting worse at the close up images.

I am still having a hard time with the green egg shells but on the lav orp eggs I finally could see the veining. It looks like five of the seven are definitely developing and the other two are still questionable. Not bad for shipped eggs in December at all. Here are a couple pics of what I saw. It is hard to see the veining in the pics but they are there. TOOOOOOO cool!

ETA - If I am deluding myself on the development, please let me know. It won't hurt my feelings, I am just trying to learn.

Well dsqard, I don't see it but we'll say you did.

So hey, Stockton isn't that far from Tooele and Erda is it?

I grew up 20 miles SW of Provo on the south end of Utah Lake.
We had a number of men from out little town that used to drive through Eureka, Faust and Stockton on their way to work at the army depot just north of you.
