Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Y'all don't sleep much do you? I stay up til 11, and reach for my laptop at 6 am so I can catch up! I love this thread!

I just woke up from a dream where the dog was growling at me so I had to beat him with our (plucked and half-cooked) Christmas Goose! I miss the old days when I use to dream about cars and awkward social situations! (And NO, I don't beat my dog, he has never growled at me!)

I had Cinnamon Queens as my first chickens ever as a kid! I remember they laid well, but I was not allowed to enter them in the fair!

Try telling a 10-year-old that his chickens are not purebred enough to be in a 4-H fair! I thought 4-H was about farming and learning!

I came back from the state fair with lice and mites! It is too bad that some chicken raisers do not have a clue. I have a friend who is always buying adult chickens and tossing them in his coop! I have told him, but he don't listen!

I plan on taking ONLY chickens to the fair this year that I am going to offer for sale after the fair. If they don't sell, I will give them away, but I am not bringing them home. I don't really have show quality stock YET! However, the 2x I won grand Champ was with hatchery birds lol

I have 1 golden comet and she lays a big brown egg every single day. I bought a pullet (chick) for my uncle and gave her to him when she turned 4 months old. She started laying a week later and lays every single day. My only experience with comets is these 2, from a hatchery....but I will get more this spring when the feed store gets them. I'm very happy with them both. Both are very sweet girls also.

I can take pictures when i get back if you'd like.

I also have the golden comets. I have 6. They have been laying since they were about 4-4 1/2 months old. 1 egg a day...7 days a week. Nice big brown eggs. They are super friendly. They come running and flapping when they see me and my kids. They will hop right on your lap. Mine are form Mt.Healthy Hatchery. I would get them again.

Great personality:
Orpingtons (from a breeder)
Brahma's

For colorful eggs:
Marans
Welsummers
Olive eggers

My Marans eggs are huge and they are still pullets. My welsummers lay a nice large egg, but not as big as the Marans. Both breeds are friendly, although not what I'd call "lap chickens" like the Orps and brahma's.

Thanks for the crazy visual, you will now be responsible for my random bursts of laughter throught the day, and the resulting crazy looks I'll get!!

Btw, if the dog does growl....is the cristmas goose then at risk once again?

omg *insert random burst of laughter* see how this is gonna go!

It is funny isn't it. I live in town and I have a few chickens and everyone thinks I am strange. Then I find BYC and I see so many people with so many chickens and I begin to feel as though perhaps I don't have enough. It is funny how the company you keep can change your mindset. I am going to have to do some serious reining in on my desire to buy, buy, buy.

I swore I was only going to breed on color of one breed and confine my "Oooooo I want one of THOSE!!!

" to pretty hens in the layer pen....
Wanna guess how well that idea is working?

EDIT to add:
Bob's Henhouse :

re: incubitis and the # of chickens. IMHO, if you are still counting them, you don't have enough.

So funny, those were my exact goals. Breed only one kind of chicken and skip the incubator and let the ladies do the work naturally. Laugh is on me!
