Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

It is funny isn't it. I live in town and I have a few chickens and everyone thinks I am strange. Then I find BYC and I see so many people with so many chickens and I begin to feel as though perhaps I don't have enough. It is funny how the company you keep can change your mindset. I am going to have to do some serious reining in on my desire to buy, buy, buy.

I swore I was only going to breed on color of one breed and confine my "Oooooo I want one of THOSE!!!

" to pretty hens in the layer pen....
Wanna guess how well that idea is working?

EDIT to add:
Bob's Henhouse :

re: incubitis and the # of chickens. IMHO, if you are still counting them, you don't have enough.

You have a back yard?!?! I'm new, I imagined with all those 'chicks to be' in the 'bator you must be out of town! lol
'Course the down side to having land is having the urge to put chicken houses all over it...

Well since we are all sitting back, waiting, with absolutely nothing better to do; I have a topic of discussion that maybe some kind soul will have time to comment on while we're waiting to receive our New Year's gifts. I was looking at my oblong little RIR eggs today thinking, surely I can do better than this, so.....if anyone wouldn't mind, I would personally like to know what breeds you experienced chickaholics really appreciate for egg production for eating. I am interested in a pretty, shiney, nicely-shaped large/extra large/jumbo egg preferably a pretty color of brown that gets laid daily from a hen with an enjoyable disposition (I can dream, can't I?). I have a couple of hatchery austrolorps that almost get this done for me, but would enjoy hearing about other's favorites. Pics of the eggs would be great. I thought the platter with the olive, brown, and speckled eggs was lovely. Tell us why you prefer the breed you do. Love my lav ameraucanas but wouldn't even dream of wasting one of those eggs on breakfast at this point! Thanks in advance.

Laree I love the black box over the "nekkid" tush! I don't know if I could carry on the computer with that on the couch! I would have to throw a blanket over them just so I could not keep looking over at the couch and laughing.
