Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Well my little pipper from yesterday hatched out at 4 this morning. I had been checking every two hours but saw no progress. 10 o'clock, midnight, 2'oclock. But she woke me at 4 a.m. crying her heart out. I could hear her through the walls and clear into my bedroom. I finally took her out of the bator and tucked her in the bed with us - and she hushed. Now I am wondering how long she will be an only-lonely. I have a little cripple chick that I put her in with. Hopefully they will benefit from one another's company.

Now you did it I'm going to look at mine.....I figure to have mine start tomorrow I raise early birds

I never do anything different with hatching Marans eggs .... NEVER. They are just like any other chicken egg. As a matter of fact, I have a bator full hatching right now! I also never want my humidity over 65% at lockdown. I do not like sticky chicks, and that is what I have experienced if I let the humidity go too high. I do not believe broody chickens treat Marans eggs any different than other eggs, and neither do I.

Ok this is my first time trying to hatch quail eggs. These things really do make me way more crazy than chicken eggs.

First off I couldn't candle them at all, too thick of shells and too many spots on the eggs. Then the spots are like zebra stripes in the wild and they make your eyes see things that aren't there, like wiggles.

I swear I see one move and then I stare at it and then My eyes get all messed up and I question myself if I even say anything move at all. And another problem with having spots on the eggs is how in the world am I going to see when there is a pip!!!!!! Going crazy here.

I have a pic somewhere that I'd show, but I can't find it. Perhaps someone I've sent it to can post it? I use fine grit sandpaper to sand 3-5 mm stripes down the side like Latitude Lines. I generally remove just until the pigment is gone in the middle, being very delicate about it. I remove no more than 15-25% of the surface area, and mist the eggs with Betadine dilution. I allow them to air dry.

Kathy, my humidity is holding at 60%. However - there is a crazy amount of condensation on the inside of the viewing glass. It is raining here. I can't figure out if the humidity in there is actually higher than what the hygrometer is telling me or???
What is a sticky egg?

I do NOT want it, thank you very much! NO, no, no!

I see Brandon had 5 pips before he went to bed (your Indian Rivers).

Naw those are the Plymouth Partridge Rocks very nice ones too from Welp or really Privett one of those hens is my first broody due the 8th....any reason why mine seem to hatch early? Maybe the Ultra Kibble? I'm going to buy some of that foam Brandon's going to have a good hatch I'm sending him the vibes

It looks like snow flurries this morning pretty heavy frost and they had a wreck on the hwy this morning from ice........

Denny, I went into lock down yesterday and I candled and pulled eggs out. I pulled 6 eggs out since they were clear. All put one were the Indian River. The other you did not pencil in what it was. We will see what happens.

What is a sticky egg?

The chick is so sticky it can not move around inside the egg. Often it will pip and never go any further. I have noticed if this happens, the chick will continue to work on the pip hole, making it larger, but not being able to rotate inside the egg to zip.

If you have condensation, I would think your humidity is higher than 60%. Are you sure your hygrometer is accurate? In my experience, if I get condensation, my humidity is too high. I dunno, just my experience.
