Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

This is Christy Brown (no not from my hatch today). She has a bad leg. She will be three weeks tomorrow. She can't keep up with her momma or siblings, and other incubator chicks seem to pick at her bad foot. So I put her in with my newborn. Hopefully they will be comforting to one another.

This is, for lack of a better name yet, "crybaby". Can't believe she is here this early!

Fritz - may become Fannie if it is a pullet, can't be sure yet 'cause I'm stoopid - is the only frizzled chick that hatched out of that batch. Very active in the brooder, then suddenly lethargic, couldn't lift its head. Recovered in a "hospital" brooder after some special care and Pedialyte added to water. I think it got some moldy feed (which I discovered when I removed Fritz from the ginormous brooder and immediately cleaned up). Anyway, Fritz is very talkative, quietly, and loves sitting in my lap. Has scrambled up to my shoulder several times. I am going to charge the camera batteries for The Hatch and will take some pictures of Fritz.

That's all. This is the first one I have ever considered keeping in the house past brooding period.

Kathy, my humidity is holding at 60%. However - there is a crazy amount of condensation on the inside of the viewing glass. It is raining here. I can't figure out if the humidity in there is actually higher than what the hygrometer is telling me or???
What is a sticky egg?

The chick is so sticky it can not move around inside the egg. Often it will pip and never go any further. I have noticed if this happens, the chick will continue to work on the pip hole, making it larger, but not being able to rotate inside the egg to zip.

If you have condensation, I would think your humidity is higher than 60%. Are you sure your hygrometer is accurate? In my experience, if I get condensation, my humidity is too high. I dunno, just my experience.

Thank you, it is what I suspected, and exactly why I asked you - I would prefer to learn from your experience rather than watch them suffer in the shell.

When I woke up this morning, my bator was full of chirping chickies. A few hatched yesterday, and the rest during the night. There are a dozen Marans in this group, all hatched along side other breeds. No, this is not my New Years hatch ....

Have I missed the deadline for the crowing photo contest? If not, here is my entry titled: Training Faciltiy, Icelandic Crowing Team, Winter Olympics 2014

The second guy on deck took a snooze.
