Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

This hatching business is really fascinating to watch! When my first one came out a couple hours ago, she immediately cruised all around the bator chirping madly. Then she settled down and rested some, moving occasionally. Now for the last half hour she has been snuggled up against one of the other eggs....that just happens to be thinking about beginning to zip. Every time the little one inside the egg pecks at the shell, the hatched one lifts her head up and trills encouragement. Is this normal? I think it's pretty darned awesome!

This is all new to me since the one and only hatch I've had all happened underneath a broody hen....and I just saw fluffy, active chicks appear out from under her.

This is the best NY's I've had in a long time - thanks to you all!!
I'm sure glad I found this site, found you fun people and decided to 'go for it' and join this hatch.

Edited to add.......the weather is definitely messed up all around the country. It's sunny here today! In Oregon. The temps are in the 20's and nothing has unfrozen yet today, but the sky is blue and the round yellow ball (what is that?) is up in the sky!!!

Yes, it's normal for the first ones hatched to be the cheerleaders to get the other ones to hatch. That's why we're all addicted to hatching, it's amazing to watch.
