Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Nancy, I can't imagine carrying that many buckets of water.

We are in a "deep freeze" right now and I have to carry just 4 buckets of water a day. It was -10 degrees last night and I thought about my poor animals all night...hoping they made it through. I can't imagine how they make it sleeping outside in this cold! I fill the water bucket for the donkey and if she doesn't get a drink fast, well then it freezes right back up....crazy cold out there. I didn't win a certificate, but I sure might try and order some Marans eggs for the Easter Hatch. Have a good day and be careful out there, I am picturing you sliding down icy hills with tennis rackets on your feet.

Awwww Nancy, if I was closer I'd lend you a quad to drive through all that snow! Be careful and don't shovel too much....and stretch after you do or you'll be sore the next day.

Good morning to you too Laree! Mine are doing great. Eating, drinking and pooping in great amounts!

Nancy, please be careful out there on the ice. I slipped on some the other day and went down. Luckily all I hurt was my pride. This is my first really cold winter with all of the animals and it hasn't been pleasant learning all the things I have to do to make sure they all have water and food.
daisychick if you have electricity anywhere near your water buckets for your donkey, the electric deicers work really well. I use them for my horses water. You can get ones that are safe for plastic buckets and you can plug them into an extension cord. I know that the manufacterer's say not to but who really has a GFCI outlet four feet from their water buckets? Just use a 12 guage extension cord and you will be fine. Definitely saves your back from lugging buckets of water.
Hope everyone else's chickies are doing great too!

Yes I have tank heaters for the horses, but the donkey (baby) is in a separate pen for now and is way too far from electricity. So I haul water to her. I can't wait for her to get big enough to be in with the horses. I bought the chickens a heated dog bowl and I just fill it up twice a day and it stays ice free, so far loving that purchase

We're still here with Peeps (as my 4-year-old has dubbed her) growing along. She's about twice her hatched size now and growing what appear to be Sizzle feathers on the tips of her wings. We've set 20 eggs (half shipped, half local mutts) to hopefully give her some company soon.

AND we finally finished the chicken coop in the yard for the 6 8-week-olds we have. They seem to be enjoying the space (though they tend to congregate under the house mostly), despite the freezing weather and snow.

This is awesome! I want one of these for my D'uccles....but it couldn't have a suspended run. My babies are so friendly they wouldn't be able to stand it if we didn't come in with them! lol They fly up and perch on my shoulder, on my head, in my hood...every time I come in the coop! That is like the perfect size, and the run is covered (we get hawks) Great job!
