Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

I can't stand it when that happens.. And what doesn't help at all, is my DH hovering over the bator saying.... "It needs help, I don't think it can get out!! Are you going to help it.. I think you need to help it.. It's going to die like that.. WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO HELP IT???"

I helped them both out since they have been pipped for more than 24 hours. The membrane was not quite dry, but pretty thick, and these two also popped out when the shell was half off. I hope I don't have to do this with ALL of them!!!!

Wow, maybe you won't have to help them all.

I know you were having issues with humidity.. Think that may be why?

So sorry about your little Icelandic. Mine have been notoriously hardy little guys but we have had one or two with bad legs as well over the year I have been hatching them. Know you did your best for it.

Mary

The other four in there are little sprint demons... they can run from long end to long end in a second!!
Very hardy chix... glad to know that you've had at least a couple like this.

Didn't mention... there are 31 in that brooder... soon to be 30... what I hoped I'd get at the least at most I hoped for 45.

That's too bad, Mahonri. I have had chicks that needed a couple of days to get their muscles going, particularly if they were big. I don't cull in these cases unless they remain poorly after 72 hours out of the shell. If they can't manage it by the time they'd need to get food & water (past yolk sustenance period) *then* I cull. Or if they are suffering.

I take the position of, "What would happen in nature?" Mind you, there's nothing natural about incubating, and that does seem a stretch, I try to be patient like a hen would be.

You haven't read the thread! (I know, it's like impossible isn't it?)

Yes and "HE" is beautiful & HUGE!

Kathy, are the contests in your update *without* prizes truly not offering prizes? I have a hankerin' to offer up a fabulous prize and can't think of a contest to run. I thought I could offer it for one of those if they haven't any prize.
