Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

gryeyes, judges4- it's fine to let them cook until the 5th.

You'll want to do a sniff test daily, just in case something is rotten in Denmark, but honestly, some little buggers just take forever to pull their blood supply out of the external veining, and others are slow about yolk absorption. It's not uncommon for them to get their blood pulled in, pip and zip, then SIT there, because they aren't done absorbing their yolk. Likewise, sometimes they just pip and sit forever, because they haven't absorbed their blood yet.

I have 3 cheapo aquarium thermometers in each of my incubators, because I've found them most reliable. No calibrating, not affected by humidity because they're sealed in a glass tube. I hatch from day 20.5 to day 22.5 usually, if my temps are consistent using these old-school thermometers, so I think a lot of incubators have been running high in this round.

Another update: 5 hatched so far, 3 pips and nothing for the remaining 5...of those that hatched I have 2 black and 3 yellow. I had eggs from halo and cloverleaf farms and since I didn't mark them I don't know which eggs hatched!

Nine chicks here, four more pipped that I can see. All 'out' chicks either in recovery hovabator or brooder. THe one I 'helped' earlier that turned out to not need help is fine and out.

I think it was just a big chick - might not have made it out.

Thanks CC! Looks like Eggwatch 2011 is going to be a bust, here. My temps fluctuate between 98.0 to 100.9 which was great for growing chicks in eggs, but apparently not hatching them. Nothing has happened in the bator, but they have been stared down by the xray vision of my kids and husband when I'm not hogging the window. Thrilling to think we might be in the running for more eggs. Now to solve the problem of how we keep from killing them after 3 weeks of diligence, as well.

#2 Blue Copper baby is here.....pipped at 8:12am and hatched at 10:36am, quick little bugger.

Also have pip #3 in 2 out of the 4 Marans eggs, and 4th Marans egg is rocking and peeping!

I set eggs at 11:57AM on Dec. 11th, if the 3rd pip hurries fast like the 2nd one, I could possibly have a chick hatch exactly at 21 days or 504 hours. That would be totally cool!
No movement in the 3 Olive eggs, last movement I noticed in them was yesterday.

Congrats on all the new chickies!

Please don't kill them yet. I've had eggs hatch on day 25 because of the temp. Give them until Monday, please.

Oh, we are leaving them as is until something happens; hatch or stink.

Just wanted to throw out a big THANK YOU once again to Pat, AKA peepacheep, for donating the calendar won by Murano Farms.

Many thanks on making this hatch both fun and eggsciting!!!

Of course thanks to the rest of you for running the weekly contests and the other contests announced during the hatch...

And especially to KathyinMo for helping to keep track of it all!

You are all angels!!!

For all who are less experienced or want to try someone else's method of LG/Hovabator still-air incubation, I'm putting my much-requested incubation cheat-sheet on my BYC page. I'll add pics later.

This is exceedingly successful for me, and I am NOT a fan of disciplined, careful incubation- I open the thing constantly and can't keep my hands out- BUT I DON'T change the thermostat unless it's WAAAAY off.

Take a look if you're interested.

Just had another Icelandic pop it's top... I looked up and it was just after 12 and I was panicked for second to take a pic of it and the computer...... Starting day 22 folks.
