Now how hard would it be to explain to the boyfriend (who is a very lovely, understanding, mild tempered man) that an emu egg just happened to show up in a dozen trader joe's eggs that I drove over 100 miles round trip to pick up and they all just happened to accidentally jump in my incubator...

Hey

I slipped eggs by my husband for a long time.

Even a chick order of 25!

One little ole Emu egg would be a piece of cake.

It should be OK... I always wrap some with damp paper towel .... in a bit go back and check it - if blood is absorbed, pick some more shell and membrane away. It is very possible now for it to shrinkwrap. will need to keep an eye on it

it didn't appear to be shrinkwrapped. Do I need to spray it with warm water? Wrap it in a damp warm paper towel? Up the humidity in the incubator??

Ugh! I swore I wouldn't do this! Hands off, I said. Let it be.

Yeah, right.

And I can't stay awake much more than an hour or so. My sick DD hasn't given me much rest. Can I just leave it or will that kill it?!?

I let mine stay all night with the wet washcloth on it. However, the washcloth was dried to it, in spots in the morning. Came off easily though with warm water. Chick had to be excised out of it.

Chick is fine. Depends on how weak it is. How much blood was there? It's probably going to have a little bit. If you see nice red veins though, cut it out and put the chick back in the bator. But a small amount of blood ... probably normal and I'd excise the chick from the membrane.

I've got to take another pic of the chic I hatched from an egg of halos.

it was a big blue egg.

And out came the largest orange chick I've ever seen.

Blue Wheaten Marans roo X Blue Wheaten Ameraucana hen... = HUGE, HUGE, HUGE Olive Egger. Everyone in the family agrees it's a roo and it's already getting black wing feathers coming in.

Every time I say I'm going to beD, I hit refresh one more time.

I'll never catch up tomorrow cuz I have work. Glad I have Wednesday off cuz I'm working Saturday this week.

no spraying.
no upping the humidity.
wrapping in paper towel would be best option,,,,,but not tightly and I dont cover the beak.
I dont leave it in there long - long enough to absorb blood or let my hands rest from picking at the shell

maybe someone else can answer that better.

This guy's pretty good. I ordered 25 chicks when I really only "wanted" 8. Poor thing built an 8x8 coop for me, then realized I wasn't going to give ANY of the (ahem) 31 chicks away and then built another 8x12 extension onto the coop. Now I've got an incubator, and 20 chicks in the basement. I've at least got most of them leaving for a new home next weekend. But what kind of coop does one need for an emu?

I am just glad it all got cleared up. I never enter the contests. I just like to hatch babes. Ken wants an Emu. Now I need to find an egg. Would it fit in the Brinsea Eco 20???

I know where you can get a emu egg

Ok then SPILL IT!!!!
