Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Have you tried "pecking" at the feed with your fingernail kinda? That seems to work most of the time.

Yeah, I did that this morning and she seemed to pick up on it. She pecked it at least, though I doubt she "ate" it. I'll keep it up today and see if the "gets" it. She's in a Rubbermaid tub, so she can see through well and spends all of her time looking out for us, so I scattered some food around the edges where she frequents.

Mine that were born on Friday/Saturday just started to eat a lot today. One of the things that I've found also gets them to eat is ripping the top off an egg carton (without holes) and sprinkling some crumbles and grit on it. They sleep in it and peck in it. I also give them scrambled egg and their crumbles mixed in warm water, but like I said, there was minimal interest in that until today.

Judges4 ditto on the pecking their feed with your fingernail, I've had to do that with mine and they figure it out Oh look mom's eating so hmmm , sometimes the other chicks will look at that chick and go oh okay theres something to eat heheee.

I've been staring at my egg, making sure she is still breathing (like watching your newborn and making sure they are breathing before you can go back to sleep). Every once in a while she peeps at me. She's just not in any hurry to come out and play! I can tell it's going to be really hard to get something done today. One other egg still has a moving chick. The other 4 are not, as far as I can tell. I'll still leave them in through the day.

Judges4, thanks for posting pics of your baby. She's adorable. I'm so glad you got her.

Congrats Steve on the win! You really deserved it until that last sarcastic comment you made about me. Including Kathy was a wise move! But, in all honesty, I do have the cutest chicks. I am sure Kathy's chicks are lovely but come on:

Steve, I enjoyed your posts and your positive spirit amid the madness. I kept waiting for a post about a plague of locusts but it never came. Or, I missed it in the fracas. Enjoy your victory!

And, all due respect to wolftracks (PEST extraordinaire), if there is a PEST award she must tie with gryeyes or at least gryeyes should receive an honorable mention. Did she ever hatch out a TJ's chick?

Kathy could split the coke caps between the two!

I'm right there with ya goochgirl. I jump and look everytime I hear a peep.. I should be at work, but my town has run out of water.. Something is wrong with the pump at the main hub.. They are working like crazy since yesterday to get it working again.. So, you can't do much without water. Yay, another whole day to bator watch!

I hatched out THREE (3) Trader Joe's chicks! So far, any way.... Plus a BR, which I am not sure is a BR, aren't those chicks supposed to have some white on the tops of their heads? This one is all black but for the tummy, and it's got puffy cheeks....

Any way, as a reminder, here is the first TJ chick, when still in the 'bator:

And here is the third chick, hatching upside down:

Everyone here is doing great. They have all started to eat, but quail are a bit faster than chicken when it comes to food. They are absolutely adorable.

I don't think I've ever had to entice chicks to eat by pecking or whatever. They will almost always catch on without help. I don't know how, but they do.
