I prefer Fedco as well.

Maybe it's because my ex-husband makes tools for Johnny's

I like both Fedco and Johnny's.
I do order 99% of my seeds and supplies from Fedco. I'm even a member. But Johnny's has some seeds not available at Fedco. I like the Islander pepper, and I use the sprouter they sell all the time for starting wheatgrass for the chickens, and testing seeds for germination. I am also lucky enough to live close to both the Johnny's store and the Fedco warehouse.

Does anyone order from Pinetree Seeds? They're in New Gloucester. Not sure if they have a retail store, but I used to order from them when I was seeking out other seed varieties.

have done pine tree... good prices, but I stopped using them because i got a few very poor germination packets and even one packet where all of the seeds were crushed. Then I found Fedco. Pine Tree might be better now.

Congratulations Annabananna! My Faverolles have just started laying. It's so exciting!
I lost one of my Marans hens to prolapse today. I found her on the floor this morning, too late. She was fine yesterday. I have never had that happen before. I hope it never happens again it's so awful :(
Focusing on the new...
I put two of the Fav eggs in the incubator with my daughters shipped silkie eggs, just for fun! I dont know if they will do anything being pullet eggs but just for fun anyway.
I have two Pekins, the hen has been laying two eggs a day again, and is being testy with the chickens. I watched her sneak up to the nest boxes and grab the hens! I have been putting them out during the day with their own food and a big pan of water to bathe in. It saves on the mess they make in the coop, and now so my hens can lay unmolested. I let them back in today, it was too cold even for them. I love watching them tobogganing in the snow like penguins. I like them but, what a pain in winter.

Hey all,
Ugh its cold out today, that warm day was such a tease. My chickens dont like it either. I was getting 5 or six eggs a day from my 7 girls but today we only got two. I think they are striking too.
I have a few morbid type questions.. Today we dispatched our oldest hen who was no longer laying well. She will make a good Coq au Vin tomorrow night. What do you guys feel is the most humane and best flavor preserving way to kill? Also, what is the best way to get the pin feathers out? Feathering the big stuff has been easy but thus far the best luck I have had was with a torch and that still left something to be desired...

I have decided to just order chicks from McMurray. I emailed longhorn about a special chick order and got no answer :/ are they the luddite type? Do I need to call instead? Anyhow, I think I will just buy the 10 chicks I can fit and take the extras to swaps or sell locally. I will be ordering for April. If enough people from on here want stuff I will go head and order it for you to make 25. I am near Cumberland center so, if anyone wants something, come the time, just let me know!

Congrats anna, and Widget, Ill cross my fingers for you for the job! That being said my work is hiring but it is only 17 hours a week retail if anyone is looking for a job in Falmouth.

I've always had luck both emailing and calling Longhorn. Although yesterday when I tried to call around 930 the call wouldn't go through. I waited about 30 minutes and tried again with no problem. So perhaps they were having issues. I do know they haven't started taking chick orders yet. That happens in February.

I use to order seeds from Johnnies but got cost prohibitive and then found Pinetree and Fedco. Have been very happy with these seed companies and have no gmo seeds, this Ilike
