Making your own dog food.

Couldn't have said it better except I've only been doing it for 2 years. Also its much less expensive for me than to buy a premium kibble.

Lol! Sorry, that comment struck me as funny

hehe. How do you make your own dog food? Would you be willing to share your recipe?

Absolutely!

I use 50% meat (chicken, beef, venison, fish), 25% grain and 25% vegetable. I also add egg and some liver. It's easier to cook in a large batch and then freeze in containers that will hold 3 days worth safely in the fridge. I drizzle fish oil on their meal regularly too.

clanreed....what is Max eating....chicken? He sure doesn't look like he's in a hurry!

Didn't know that about rabbit. I'm learning new things already! Thanks!

Wow...it's so helpful to have your veterinarian's support. I actually advertise on Craigslist for freezer burned meat from time to time. Fishermen seem to always have more trout than they can consume in a year.... doggies say 'yumm'!

don't forget about the deer hunters!! it's almost that time of year again, so the hunters will start cleaning out last years meat. And then come all the scraps from the new harvest.

When we lived in WV we met a guy who does wild game processing. We got elk, buffalo, even bear meat! And of course enough deer meat to last us almost all year!

you don't ever happen to come out to the Lebanon area do you? I have a ton of steaks that the butcher didn't double wrap like he usually does and they are all freezer burnt.

what do you use for calcium source? I've never done "home cooked" only raw.

Here is a great site that has a spreadsheet to help figure out the amounts for the RAW diet

http://www.rawdogranch.com/ Lauri is a member of my GSD forum and is an awesome source for doing RAW the right way

right now i feed kirkland kibble, with the occasional raw treat (about once a week)
however once i get my own place i plan on going 100% prey model raw for my carnivores.
much better for them, but right now my freezer is not even 1sqft (i have one of those dorm sized frigdes) and doesnt work so not enough room to do raw yet lol.

babyblue ~ Lebanon where? Maine? I was there last October!!! hahahaaaa! Actually trying to talk DH into another fall trip.

dainerra ~ I sometimes top their bowl with a dollop of yogurt or cottage cheese. I also dry egg shells, grind them and sprinkle. There are many ways to add calcium. Guess I didn't mention that in the 'recipe'!! I have gotten venison from hunters as old meat. What I was very surprised about was the quality of some of the meat I got advertising for freezer burnt. Got about 40 pds of venison from one guy that was human quality. It was all I could do to keep hubby from using it! He can go shoot one for us if he wants....I don't 'share' what I've gotten for my puppers!!!
