I've been making a mad dash at tilling, putting in fence, and planting the last few days with the weather finally cooperating. I'm totally fried a deep shade of red at the moment. I'm hoping I can finish up getting most of the things in the ground here in the next few days.
I need to get more pens built for my chicks to grow out in. Its hard to know some days which project to work on first. But for now....I'm gonna probably crash I'm so tired tonight...it got so stinking hot. This girl can't handle it.
Oh do take care Lisa!! Getting fried is NOT, I repeat NOT good for the skin!! EEK! Or at least slather on the sunblock and wear a lightweight, airy hat! Get some rest!
Its still raining off and on here, today was 60 and lots of clouds, very little drizzle.

Yeah....I know...i put on lots of sun block and i still got fried (I blame it on my pale red headed self). I'm stuck working inside tomorrow at my jobs and can't say as i'm really upset about it. I am ready for a bit of a break from the sun and its supposed to be in upper 90's. I can't handle that very well.
How are you doing? I haven't talked to you in a bit...how's the birchens?

Oh, I hear ya! It was WAY too hot today. I got some chicks moved to a bigger brooder, but I have one batch that is ready to go into the grow out pen that I haven't fishished yet! I've GOT to work on it tomorrow.
I got some of my stuff planted, but I still have a few more things to put in the ground. In the meantime, I've been watching the hens happily excavating all the mulch I put down to wherever they thought was a better location.
SOOOOO... I've got to figure out some kind of inexpensive fencing that will keep those busy girls OUT!

Hens can be so goofy like that sometimes. I've found using the shorter rabbit fencing works pretty well for discouraging my girls, but it depends upon how much your girls like to jump fences and etc.
I seriously have to move some chicks around too. I've got a pen or two to build, but I feel like I never have enough time. I'm gonna get it done. I have to. I hear its supposed to cool back off again after tomorrow. I'm so praying that's true.

sigh....I wish that's how it was here. Its starting to do the same thing as last spring where it was cold and rainy and crappy and then boom....overnight it goes to super hot and dry. No inbetween. I'm really hoping for it to cool back off a bit to more moderate temps. The ground is so dry, i'm watering every morning at the moment in the garden to keep things from drying out too much. I'm not built to handle hot temps at all
It got to over 100 degrees in parts of Kansas today. We were in the mid 90's. Hot. ALL lights were off in all the brooders today, even the one with the newest chicks. Older chickens and guineas were sitting around with their mouths open, panting, most of them just staying in the shade or digging into my COOL MULCH!
I've got a place that is partially fenced that I am going to use for my grow out pen. I'm still in the "pondering stage."
I'm trying to come up with the best plan to make it cool enough in the summer, warm enough in the winter yet still have enough ventilation, but not so much that it lets the rain in during wet weather.... decisions, decisions.
I've got one thing to say about your sunburn, Gilavina.... Solarcaine Aloe Vera Gel. (The green stuff.) Works great... instant relief.

haha....I'm slathered in it right now. I love that stuff!
I hope you are able to decide how best to proceed so you can get your pens built. I'm not gonna lie....I am going to be making some temporary pens to use while I am working on more permanent solution. I am running so short on time this week its not even funny.
