Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi all!

I have eggs!!
Must find my color chart...

Please excuse the shavings stuck all over the eggs...maybe I should use hay?
the shavings seem to stick to the "spray paint" - ?? -

This girl lays an egg every day!

The one in the middle is from my Red Star, the two on the sides are Marans.

These are from a blue and a splash Marans

In preparation for next year, who has Marans with a nice correct size and width?

I have to get new pics, but I think I have decent shape, tails, combs, and color, but I need more size and width in my guys before I go any further.

I think I have pretty good egg color, too - see above - ?? -

My one roo has a couple middle toe feathers, too, so need to get a roo with better toes and size/width.

Yeah! Congrats on the eggies! I have the width and size here with my boys. It's just the REST of it I'm working on!

Color, shank/toe feathering, combs, a wee longer back, and darker eggs. Other than that, I'm good!

Nice to see you back!

Thanks Debbi! Glad to be back!
Summer is crazy busy on the farm!

None of mine are perfect by any stretch, since I'm at the very beginning of my journey, but I'm happy with the pieces I have to work with so far, except definitely need to add size/width...

I've set aside my roo with the 2 middle toe feathers (he's in with the layers) until I see some of his chicks grow up. I have about 6 of his that are cooking.

Anyhow - maybe we can trade cockerels or something?
or can you ship chicks?

I don't have much luck with shipped eggs, think my PO is too rough on them b/c I have a 98-100% hatch rate at home....

Ok Debbi, here are my show results....
I took a Cock, Hen, pullet and a cockerel. There weren't any Marans classes, so I had to show as "Any Other Recognized Continental" All 4 of my birds took 1st (all had other birds in their class

) The Cockerel was Best in Class Continental and Champion Continental and the pullet was Res. Champion Continental. It was only our county fair, but I was still a proud Mama!

yeah...these birchens are certainly a lot of work. Its a good thing I really like the color pattern! I finally have my birds all written down...I'm working on wittling down quite a bit still...but I'm making great strides. I think I probably easily hatched out around 400 chicks....in different breeds and color varieities of course thru my hatching season this spring. I've sold off quite a few layers to people who sell eggs off their farms for eating. and have had fresh meat all year long as well as now I'm filling up the freezer for the winter. I am quite happy to be making progress.

Sounds like you have some silly girls over there....and Sassy sounds like she is really funny to watch. I love it.

I'm working on a few birchen projects side by side to see which one produces the best overall results...including the egg color. I'm sure we'll have a lot of notes to compare when I get to hatching and growing out more birds next year.

congrats! How many Marans do you think there were including all of yours? I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be showing all by my lonesome this fall...that is if they are in feather

Only 2 others. They were mossy and clean legged.
