Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Got a photo of Darryl. Yes she has dark eyes, but they are not black like the photo shows. She has a nice egg and a great body, plus, she likes to go broody. She is a pure Davis bird and is also in with Lil' Bill to see what they will produce...I have produced some nice blues with this girl and Bill Sr.
I think I anticipate the pairing and products to come with her and Lil' Bill more than any of the other gals that he is in with.

Hey Pink, would you be selling eggs from Darryl and Bill in the spring?
I'm already trying to plan my baby-chicky fix. Something to look forward to, kind of like the seed catalogs they send out in the middle of a blizzard... Roberta

Morning everyone, finally, finally made the cross country trek w/ my birds to sounthern OR from the midwest. Transported 45 birds in the back of a modified small horse trailer. My brother-in-law, who is a maestro w/ wood, made 8 different cages so was able to separate roos w/ their hens. Had both LF and Bantams along w/ 2 dogs and 2 cats and it only took 40 hours:eek:. The drive was not w/out some challenges...blew a wheel bearing in IL and lost rubber off of trailer tire in N. NV:barnie all that being said every bird arrived in great shape and laid eggs to boot. If anyone needs details would be glad to share info.

Geebs, did not make it up your way this past weekend, to pick up my goats, due to the snafoos and ensueing time delays. So dissappointed, but life happens. Will pm you

Debbi, glad to see you finally recd your hatching eggs....fingers crossed

Pinks, of course love seeing your beautiful birds

Wynete, have a BC Roo from you which has finally come into his own and am getting ready to test him over some of my BC girls. He is just gorgeous and the sweetest boy who will come right up to me looking for leftever pancake, popcorn or whatever for his treat. He doesn't have a ton of copper on him but am going to work with him anyway and see what he can produce.

Wheaten Marans coloring:

I'm new to this forum and have been skimming through this thread looking for advice on the coloring for Wheaten Marans hens. I know the standard has only been approved for Black Copper but I've read through the French standard for the Wheaten variety. What range of lightness/darkness is acceptable when all three prescribed colors are present? I've put pictures of my darkest and lightest pullets below. I'm taking the "start where you are with what you have" approach to breeding my Wheatens, so I appreciate any feedback on how best to breed from these to get to the standard. Both have lightly feathered legs and are about 16 weeks old. I'll try to get pictures of my two cockerels. One is about 7 1/2 months and the other is the same age as the pullets.

rsquared: What a wild trip you must of had!! After I get out of grad school I am thinking about moving cross country again. I haven't ever moved with that many chickens before...lots of other pets though. I know it can be a challenge. I would love to hear more details on how you managed the chickens! I think I would try to go fall or spring. How did you manage thier water and all that?
