Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Raven~

I too like the Silver Black Birchen alot alot alot alot...and will be having lots of them running around, the silver against the black is breath taking to me. But never fear my heart is hooked on those Silver Blue Birchens and I know there will be tons of them running around here. I just went to the website and ordered eggs.

No kidding! Can you imagine how sick you would feel to see a hawk or coyote take off with a $500.00 bird??!!

They would, no doubt, be treated like those highfalutin show horses - NEVER get to see the light of day. Kept "safe" inside - 24/7.

PS. Very glad to hear Charlotte made it through the night!

I agree with you on the price of eggs and birds. What I find confusing is when they say they want to get the birds out into people's hands and are going to do it at an affordable price. I don't know who it is that thinks 100 bucks for one single chick is affordable? That's just me tho. I also don't understand why people don't make it known the problems they might have in a line? I have steered away from many chances to buy eggs or chicks or even started birds because of a breeder's refusal to straight out answer an honest question or when they sidestep it like you never even asked. That's been a huge learning curve for me getting into the rarer breeds. To me that's just part of the territory of responsibility of wanting to sell them....maybe I'm crazy, but that's just how I feel

yay! good for you kim! wanting to grow out the chicks so you are ready to breed in the spring? To be honest....I've been tempted to do that with a couple of the breeds I have here, but I have to get my numbers down more before I even think of it.

haha...eeekkkk! I don't know that I'm cut out to be a mentor on the subject of birchens, but I certainly will help and give you the tips I know to give the best chances of beautiful birds.

I got a late start this A.M. and let some of my chickens out to run on the grass and opened the barn door for the kitties to come outside and grabbed a scoop of treats for my birds and went to the back porch to eat a raspberry danish and have a cup of coffee with my birds and it ended up being a battle. Gigantor is at lap height with his head and he's trying to steal my danish, while Poncho my blue and white spotted cat is literally crawling up my arm to get to my coffee cup. At one point I had Gigantor jump in my lap and poncho clinging for dear life on my arm as I'm holding both the plate and the cup as high in the air as possible. Stupid spoiled turds!

I was laughing so hard I couldn't do anything but laugh. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm insane, of all the days they pick to reroof their house and have about 10 people all standing there watching me....

Just hoping that I can get more than 2 birds to hatch and that they are both not cockerels...lol! I have plenty of space to grow out some chooks over winter since I only have 45 birds now. (Until the eggs under the broody hatch,

)Man talk about a difference in the amount of feed I go through. What a relief, especially since the price of feed just went up again.

yeah....you are definitely my inspiration for cutting back on the birds I hold over winter. I hatched so many this year and its been awesome, but I just don't need as many as I have at the moment. I admit I have held onto some of the nicer ones to sell at the show at the beginning of Nov. and also the weekend after that there is the exotic auction a couple of towns over I will take some more to. Then whoever is left that doesn't make the cut for the breeding pens will be going to freezer camp. I can't wait til the feed bill gets back down again.

I just realized...I still need to get some pics for Lynette of my Lavender Silver Sussex and there was another bird too...I can't remember off the top of my head, but I'll have to go back and look to see. Oh yeah.....of one of my splash birchen boys. I want to see if I can get you a pic of some of those blues and blue copper girls I have growing out....I'd love to get a fresh pair of eyes on them. I think they are beauties, but they still have a ton of growing to do.

OH....and I will be keeping my fingers crossed you get some good birchen girls from your hatch!
