Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

wow...that's not really that bad! did I ever tell you I have family that lives in TN and my uncle drives down that way from time to time to visit them? I just never really thought about how far it is

OHHHHH You could send them to me though a Chicken Train thing...... You really need to visit TN I could come to you. It only take 8 hours or so to drive from one end to the other and I live right in the middle

I am thinking of getting some of those Dewlap Toulouse Geese and park their pen as close to the neighbor's property line as I can legally get. I saw them at Newnan last year and I know they are LOUD lol. They will have to do until I can get the laughing hyena chickens that me and Debbie like LOL. I hear peacocks are pretty loud too.

Vicki did you ever get back over there and look at that property you liked?
i have tomorrow off and if it doesnt snow was plannin on headin over to see it. i really like everything about it....just waitin on price to flex a little

Yes you have had some bad luck. Sometimes the younger girls take awhile to get a larger egg size but 4 mos does seem like long enough. The eggs do seem to vary in size and shape. Some people actually get very round eggs from their Marans and they like them. Sometimes they are very ruby red looking vs more brown. It just depends on the hens. Sooo don't give up: do what we do...GET MORE! lololol

When my Wheaten starts to lay again I may hatch a couple of her eggs and see how her offspring do. As far as the BCM, I don't think she will be a good candidate with such small eggs?

heehee! i've been thru TN but never explored much...its beautiful tho. Perhaps when I start getting things more squared away on some of my birds egg train possibilities aren't out of the realm of reason.

haha....you realize that might be a couple years or more on some of these colors, yes? haha I think its safe to say I'm a bit if a perfectionist sometimes....not that they ever will be, but just want to do my best by them
I need some layer..... I will take you culls really

Oh you guys are a bad influence. I thought I was doing good with the new 6 coop breeding pen. We already have 5 large coops and several portable brooders. I'm not listening to how many you all have and might have to get more LOLOL. I also am not looking at any more breeds of birds even if they are all clucking my name. Oh but I forgot, I just put a deposit on some sebastopol goslings...is that a bad thing? Dang I really really want some peacocks too. Do you know how large of a pen you have to build for peacocks? Just huge..its gonna hog a lot of chicken breeding space lol.

Peacocks get the WHOLE YARD.. The top of the cars.... The picnic table top .. . TREE Tops. . .. AND ANYTHING else they want!
