Getting excited to see all the chicks, including mine, this weekend!!


I have my girls all "cleaned out" and waiting for a few boys to grow up to see which one will be be the first to test mate!!

Well hey there Hatching Buddy!! what all do you have for eggs in the bator again and how are they looking?

All I am missing is a marans egg! By my calculations I have one BCM that could lay in the next month or two. Of course now that I am waiting for her she will wait till she is 12 months to lay. lol!



That big one in the back cracks me up. Must be a double.

Here are my BC Marans. 2 hatched out of 14 eggs. The one on the left has just a bit of feathering on it's leg. Love that!
I'm new to the BC and am wondering about their coloring. They are so different. Now the guessing game begins.............

I gave in and set my darkest BCM eggs and a couple BlueCM eggs!
I think I have 12 left.

I also have about 7 Mille Fleur Bantam Cochin project eggs in there!

How many do you have now?
I'm going to candle once more before lockdown - can't wait!!

The pure Jeane girls have been laying for about a month and the eggs continue to darken - Yay!



Hatching is hard in the winter - how cold can an egg get before the embryo is killed?

I'm not sure how cold an egg can get....I know people have hatched eggs they had in the fridge and I've collected eggs in really low temps and still managed to hatch them.

I'll get a more accurate number that will go to lockdown on wednesday evening when I transfer them to the hatcher. I have 40 in there right now. we'll see if I end up having anymore that I need to take out that haven't continued to develop. When I do, I'll update how many from each group. Right now I have eggs from the flock that Gigantor, Big Boy, and my ameraucana (newly named Genghis, for his attitude, as in Genghis Kahn) and some from my younger birchen pen, out of my blue copper girls and one blue cuckoo project egg

Thank you, Donna. I did not know you were feather sexing them. It makes sense now!

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. IDK really... I looked at the feathers and they seem to all be the same length and that usually means roo.
