I love that! Nothing cheers me up about a hatch more than hearing those little cheeps! I always think I have imagined it at first. Then come running out shouting "I heard peeps!" And my husband meekly smiles and says...yay... wondering if his wife has really lost her mind this time. LOL!!

Ok... much to my horror I think I have just discovered "vulture hocks" on my 7 week old chicks. Here are some pics... tell me if you think it is true...

Hard to hold chick and take a pic at the same time. I am kinda holding her wing up so you can see her thigh.

See the long feathers hanging down from the thighs?

And from the back you can see the "skirt" of feathers growing down. This chick has insane feathers on her legs and feet too. None on the next toe but a ridiculous amount on her first toe for such a young bird.

It is vulture hocks isn't it?

Don't even know why I am asking.... ok how bad is vulture hocks? Are they hard to get rid of? Dominant? What's the scoop on them? Help! lol

certainly is looking suspect for vulture hocks. I haven't had them or read much up on them to know if its possible to work with them or not, but I'm hoping someone will stop by that can help with more info! How many birds do you have to work with?

I have 6 chicks that are 7 weeks old. 1 BCM pullet that is 5 months from same breeder. She does not have them I am pretty sure. And 15 day old chicks arriving in a couple weeks from a different breeder.
Sigh.... oh well. I am not gonna be able to show birds because there are no bird shows in Hawaii so for me the journey is the reward. Boy do I have a journey... lol If vulture hocks are as bad as carnation combs I will not use these birds for my marans breeding. Lookin forward to see how my next batch of babies will look!

Yup, those would be vulture hocks, and are a DQ. I'm not sure how hard they are to get rid of since I've never had any here, but I sure would not breed that bird and double up on it! So sorry
