Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Debbi! I did a dry hatch pretty much those 1st 18 days- anywhere from 16% to 30%....our old house is so dang dry it wasn't hard...even had to add a bit of water to get it up to 30% when it hit the lowest.....not to mention all the lighter eggs are doing great. I've got 28 Blue Splash and BC Marans eggs still hanging in there...just went into lockdown an hour ago in fact...3 of those are Olive eggers- and at least 24 of the 28 had little chicks moving in there when I candled them last. I couldn't be sure on 4 of them. I didn't have any temp outages or spikes (whew!) our lights flickered one day 3 times and internet pooped out, but electricity hung in there! Yay! So I'll see how this goes- I just thought it mighty weird that the 4 darkest (really dark ones!) were all clear and the pretty dark spotted/speckled ones were too...

At any rate- I hope to post baby fuzzy butt pics in a few days! Black Blue and Splash ones!

Chicky hoping here,

Morning Everyone!

Vicki~

I'm a doofus! I have been lost and lost a day somewhere along the way too....I thought Thursday was Friday and I put those eggs in lockdown a day early. I think they will be fine. Hatch day is Monday.
Tuesday is lockdown for my Olive Eggs and one very nice Marans egg from Mel....candled the other day and can't see a blippin' thing in the olives but the very nice Marans egg is doing great.

Next scheduled hatch is the 85 eggs I set Thursday morning, projected hatch day is March 29th.

Debbi~ What's the word on Ms. Wynettes eggies???

You are as bad as I am.... My hatch is monday too and next batch, over 100 eggs, is 3 days later.

My refridgerator babies are hatching!!!!!! 4 little cuties out this morning causing chaos and the rest of the eggs but one have all pipped.

They weren't due until timorrow...but I always get some early birds when I hatch fridge eggs, wonder why that is?

Debbi any news on your eggies?

Donna~ I wasn't trying to set as many as you, they just kept adding up because the girls just kept laying.

This many eggs will be the biggest set I have EVER attempted.

Yay! What colors do you have so far?!

I'm finalizing my cull/sell list and am really happy with what I have left...should be a good season me thinks!

please see my post #31900 for the whole story- I think I posted right in the middle of another conversation going on so maybe it got lost or skipped over....I don'[t want to be a bother, but I'm just thinking it must be a fluke that the darkest ones were all duds.

Thanks,
Lisa
I did buy another dozen from someone else with Dark (Bev Davis lines) eggs, but will want some Wade Jeane darkies sometime later....If any of these ones do hatch, they'll all be from lighter eggs....
Sorry to read about your eggs Lisa.

There are so many factors that can cause eggs to not be viable, from vitamin deficiencies to detached air cells and the fact that they are Marans eggs.
Tell me....do you think (if you know) that all the dark ones may have been from the same hen?

Donna~ You can post them on the thread. I would love to see how they are doing.

Vicki~ Thanks. 2 blues and 2 blacks so far and one of the little black ones has the heaviest shank feathering I think I have ever seen....including 3 stubs on each middle toe.
