Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm thinking you would get blue, black and splash as blue doesn't breed true.

Thats what I was thinking also

Okay I have a "I feel really dumb for not knowing this" kind of question...What does F-1 and F-2 mean? If you could see my face right now, if is flushed with embracement :(

Thank you Michele

no need to be embarrassed at all...F1, F2 and etc are just labels for generations in a breeding program. The offspring from a beginning of a breeding program would be generation F1 and the offspring from the F1 generation would be F2s and so on and so forth. Hope that helps.

That's what I thought, I just wonder why not just G1. That's how I marked my pictures, so I wasn't wrong, just couldn't get the F thing. Thank you for answering so quickly.

okay, I'm a newbie, n have only posted a few times, but have been lurking for quite some time and really like you guys! So I need to share.... I have Great news and Unbelievable news.

Great news: Apple Tech person fixed the glitch and found my pics!! I still haven't figured out how to post, but that will come, and I shot pics of my 11 week old BCM boys yesterday. I'm not likin the body type, they could plump up some.

Unbelievable News: my son's science teacher sent him home with an EMU egg!! He's say's it's fertile, but some things get lost in translation with this child. It IS indeed an Emu egg, and can I just say, "how cool is that?!". Now off to search, 'how to hatch EMU eggs'. Don't ask me what the heck I'm going to do with an EMU.... .

That makes sense to me too, but the "F" is a Latin or was it Greek? term, and the word escapes me right now. I tell my brain that. "F1s" are the First Ones, and so on down the line. KISS applies to ME here! It's all pretty much Greek to me!

Eleven weeks isn't too long to judge them by, unless they have obvious DQs or major faults. They can change so much in a few week's time! one of mine didn't fully come into himself until he was over 18 months old! The longer you can hold onto the boys, the better off you will be.

As for the Emu egg...are you sure there are no holes in it, as in a blown egg? Maybe the teacher told him it was "infertile"? I can't imagine a teacher sending an Emu egg home with a student and expecting them to know what to do with the hatch results, just doesn't make sense to me. On the other hand, I sure wish I had had a teacher like that!!!

At least your son told you about it. My folks would've had a hissy fit if I had told them, and Mr. Future Emu would've gone into the trash. Now me, being a sneaky animal lover, would've hid that egg in the closet, on the heating pad, and prayed for a hatch! Could you imagine me coming home to an Emu chick in my closet one day?? Even funnier would be my Mom finding it before I got home!

Oh my goodness... this is the part that always has me nervous... it's totally the best part and by far the most nerve-racking part!
I really hope a few more of them hatch out for you!!! Come on chicks! :)

These are the eggs/chickies I bought from you!

There are 8 lively little babies hatched and still in the bator- 2 more zipping right now, 1 still pipped and breathing but no zipped anymore than this am when I left for work...If these 2 weren't zipping now, I'd reach in and help that one...It look so big in the shell and I'm wondering why it isn't turning and zipping...but I don't want to compromise the others who are almost out...1 other one who didn't fit in my cut down egg carton is pipping now too...1 egg in the carton doesn't show any pips yet, and the 2 that looked clear or quitters aren't doing anything except getting rolled around by the already hatched chicks. I want all 13 to hatch...2 out of 15 isn't bad for shipped eggs! 13 out of 15 is terrific for shipped eggs I think!

So far 8/15 is pretty good too, but I want more to hatch still....each one who dies in the egg makes me sad....

Thank you for such great, fertile, dark eggs and the adorable chicks they're turning into!

11 out (1 is about out) and 1 nicely zipped. 3 not pipped or doing anything. I'll wait for the zipped one and the about out 1 to ba all the way out then I'll check that other "thought to be good" one to see what's going on....
They're in various stages of wet-dry so once all dry and fluffy, I'll take pics...
Aghhh so exciting!

What's the difference between and blue splash and black splash? Has anyone vent sexed a marans?

Well, the blue splash would be a whitish color with blue spots and a black splash would be whitish color with black spots. The amount of color in the splashes varies with each bird. I haven't vent sexed them- we usually just wait a few weeks(4 to 8) and see who is who. I know some are able to feather sex their chicks because they have observed their birds and have taken note of what indicators tell them male or female. Cuckoo Marans are maybe a little easier to tell as the males will have a larger white spot on their head at hatch compared to the girls white spot.
