Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Some people have all the luck!! I can't wait to see them. Keep giving them treats and they will love you lol. The way to their little hearts is through their greedy little stomachs :D

haha....I don't think I've ever been described as lucky before. Usually I have quite the opposite goin haha. Everyone that goes to a sale always laughs at me. I go up and down the aisles and in about 5 minutes of running through them all know exactly what I do or don't want. These were in the last two rows of the sale and really did luck out since other young pullets around their age were going for between 20 and 40 bucks each. I got a heck of a deal!

Vicki ~ Are you water logged up there?? Gees, more rain coming in tonight. Already have 6", and this place looks like a mud wrestling pit!

same here, I thought the sun was supposed to come out today but nope just more rain, grrrr.

Here is our newest hatches from Tuesday, they are so cute and an active bunch. We ended up with 12 out of I think 19 eggs. Not to bad of a hatch IMO. I think we have 3 Blue Splash Marans, 3 Cuckoo Marans, 2 Golden Salmon and a few mysteries. The one I am baffled on. I thought it was a golden salman marans but his chest is white, he doesn't have feather legs and all the rest of my marans are feather legged. He could be a Black Australorp but he has a gold head, lol. Guess I will see what he/she turns out to be. I know he isn't a mutt because I keep all my breeds penned seperately so no cross breeding is allowed. Oh and we are breeding black sex link could that be what he/she is? I am using barred rock hens with a RIR roo.

Come on little chickies!!!

These are the eggs/chickies I bought from you!

There are 8 lively little babies hatched and still in the bator- 2 more zipping right now, 1 still pipped and breathing but no zipped anymore than this am when I left for work...If these 2 weren't zipping now, I'd reach in and help that one...It look so big in the shell and I'm wondering why it isn't turning and zipping...but I don't want to compromise the others who are almost out...1 other one who didn't fit in my cut down egg carton is pipping now too...1 egg in the carton doesn't show any pips yet, and the 2 that looked clear or quitters aren't doing anything except getting rolled around by the already hatched chicks. I want all 13 to hatch...2 out of 15 isn't bad for shipped eggs! 13 out of 15 is terrific for shipped eggs I think!

So far 8/15 is pretty good too, but I want more to hatch still....each one who dies in the egg makes me sad....

Thank you for such great, fertile, dark eggs and the adorable chicks they're turning into!

Nope Ohio got the sun today. Along with the highest temps we've had since 1938. I guess we had global warming then too. ;)

Ok I have question that I have been thinking about. I know I just need hatch some and find out but still waiting for my hen to be at POL. On blue birchon roo over a blue birchon hen should they produce only blue birchon chicks or are they more like a BBS and produce blue, black and splash? Was just curiose before I decide to hatch some of there chicks when time comes.

I'm thinking you would get blue, black and splash as blue doesn't breed true.

Okay I have a "I feel really dumb for not knowing this" kind of question...What does F-1 and F-2 mean? If you could see my face right now, if is flushed with embracement :(
Thank you Michele

You'll get blue, black, splash. blue genetics will always work the same regardless of whether the blues have a pattern (like birchen, copper, etc) over them or not.

Thank you Michele

no need to be embarrassed at all...F1, F2 and etc are just labels for generations in a breeding program. The offspring from a beginning of a breeding program would be generation F1 and the offspring from the F1 generation would be F2s and so on and so forth. Hope that helps.
