I would only cull for major things like a screwed up comb or something. Unfortunately I can Ill afford to keep this many roosters for that long. Plus I want to make sure I have plenty of room for the birds. I don't want them to be on top of each other. I Plan to keep to Roos. That's it. My neighbors tolerate my hobby for now. But where I live the city said if they get a complaint they are coming for me. So I hope it all works out.

Drippy is right they will change alot. Infact, I see the most changes after 6 mos. of age and they can continue to change up to a year or more, just depends on the bird.


If in doubt post photos of them here as they grow and we will all try to help you with them if you need it. Besides.....we LOVE photos!!!!!

I am very visual. Where can I find pictures of Squirrell tail and split or slipped wing? Also, stupid comb or thumbprint comb?

Sorry, have to share and I am not making fun of anyone...just sharing something I think is funny. I laugh so hard that the tears almost run down my leg when someone says to me that someone told them that if the chicks hatch with clean shanks that the feathers will grow in later.


By the by.....I am excited to say that I have not seen a STUPID comb in a long time around here and I DO NOT MISS THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ace! Debbi posted that list and it is a VERY good one! You should be able to see faults in the Black Copper Marans thread...but if you can't find them there you can go back a few pages and see a Birchen roo that someone posted that has squirrel tail.

I still have two hens here with the carnations. I've been waiting for them to grow in some feathers before I try to sell them as layers. The roos sure aren't helping that process along either! It would embarass me no end to try to sell a naked-back chicken! They'd better hurry up, or it's enchiladas for them!!!

I sure will. I already have a couple roos trying to crow! Then when I put them in the new home they heard my EE rooster crow. They all perked up like they were saying "so thats how you do it!" I thought oh crap here we go.

Ace ~ You can do a search for those things here on BYC, or go back through some of the pages in this thread to see all of them. The Marans SOP thread (I think that's the one Math Ace started??). If it's not the SOP thread, look for the Marans thread started by Math Ace. We put a whole bunch of pics on there of faults/DQs you do NOT want to see in your flocks!
