Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

haha that's a good price, around here, that calf would be goin for 250 to 300.....when you get to meat calves, you're looking between 400 and 600. Its ridiculous how expensive they are right now.
Yeah they go for around 350 here too- that why I said she is waayy too cheap lol. I would love to have a milk cow but will probably just get a couple dairy goats. We do still have that big empty metal building with a metal carport attached to it and there is about an acre that I could fence in back there but not sure if that is enough for a big ole dairy cow. The meat calves are actually normally cheaper than the dairy cows around here but there aren't that many dairies. Good dairy goats seem to be as expensive as dairy calves depending on if they are from good milking lines, registered, etc etc.

I'm not gonna keep any males but whethers I will borrow one or pay a stud fee, if I have to lol. I was down at the farmer's market one day and someone had a couple bucks out behind there in a trailer that were for sale and man, oh geez, you could smell them things a few blocks away.
exactly....those bigger boys will smell up your whole place.

OMG I just saw this....Way too cheap somethings gotta be wrong but dang is that a cute little face or what? Somebody stop me haha. She is awfully skinny but look at that little heart on her forehead

around here its meat country...so don't know if the prices on dairy cows will ever top the beef cows. I really and wanting to raise low line angus x jersey crosses. They've been dubbed J Lows...but I really like everything about them, especially for small farm life and subsistence farming

Christie~ I belong to both of those groups too. (The Marans groups) I have the notifications sent to my email and everyday I have atleast 10-20 new emails from activity on the group. I read each one but rarely respond to them. I see lots of activity there. I enjoy reading the emails and appreciate all who contribute. I see you are asking some pretty great questions over there and you are getting some great responses. I like to post on BYC and like to read the yahoo postings. I'm funny strange like that. LOL!

Yes I saw you post there awhile back...even saw you on Classrom at the Coop. I am your own personal stalker! Lol.. Not really.:D
I have a thirst for knowledge...I will get it anywhere I can.
But I don't believe everything I read ...see signature..
It has to make sense to me.

I agree with Keara, that's the Holstein in her. Around here she'd be going for about 300 bucks. It's been about 7 years since I've been to the sale barn, but the last time I went, day old, dairy steer calves were going for about 200 bucks! Before I'd hand over any money for her, I'd wait to see her poop! Especially if she's on that nasty milk replacer....just saying!

You don't need registered if you just want milk and keep the babies, but if you want to sell babies, pay the extra and buy registered. As with any other animal, buy from a well respected breeder. Goat people are great, and they love to show off the mikers! Good udders and teats are very important. Gees, now you guys have me looking into goats! You folks are maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaddddd!
