I love the Classroom @ the Coop....I'm just a baby there and taking tiny baby steps. I too thirst for knowledge. Imput, imput, imput!!!!!
Oh gosh I posted in the "genetics and selective breeding" section once with a question. My head spun quite quickly. I still am trying to figure out what everyone was saying. lol
There are some very smart chicken genetic nerds on classroom @ the coop.

@ Gilavina
Yesterday at the salon I was talking about goats all day. One of my clients told me she has a friend who raises pygmy goats!

Oh god I am one step closer.....

I have a question.

I purchased 2 BCM pullets about a month ago from an APA approved breeder. He said around 7 weeks, but one looks much further along in age. He was in a bit of a hurry when I went to pick my chickens up and me being a new owner didn't really question it.

So this is Priscilla.

About how old do you think she is?
I don't know how old HE is. Maybe 3 months ish. He looks like he has silver Hackles and copper on his wings.... not sure if he is a cross or not. Never heard of an APA approved breeder before....

Sorry, call me ignorant but wouldn't he of been crowing by now? I've only heard clucking. I'm new to this and the rest are all hatchery chicks, but my Marans came from a breeder. I've seen hens with large combs too.

Maybe it's not APA approved, but he follows APA guidelines and NPIP? I'm still learning all this stuff. :)

That's what I LOVE about the Marans group. There are some SERIOUSLY knowledgeable and educated people over there actually working with birds on a large scale. They definitely disagree but they do it in a civilized and respectful fashion so we can all absorb and learn. Like I said earlier, MUCH to think about. Choices to make. (They are also generous with their advice to us newbies with the truly stupid questions!

There are many roads to Rome.

They will have large combs when they start laying. He has red on his wing and ONLY roos can have that.
