Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi,

This is my first post ever on BYC, EXCITING!!
I have two 10 - 12 week old black copper maran pullets.
They are all black with a lovely green sheen to their feathers, will they turn copper coloured with age?
Also I'm hoping they are both pullets and we won't find they turn into cockrels!!
Is it possible to tell at their age?

Thanks
Welcome to BYC!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this age, you should be able to tell. It's a good sign if no copper is showing at this point as the females start showing copper much later, if at all. Post some pictures if you are able. You'll get LOADS of opinions!

Thank you for your words of wisdom Don, helps me out tons!

I am very happy with the wing carriage that I have going on. Wish I could get other traits to breed forward just as easily.

Seriously wish I could get the wide open tail and the tail set of the un-useable Blue Copper roo (the one that has the blade touching his head) on everyone of my birds. Man I love the wideness he has going on. Lil' Bill isn't even as wide as he is. Total bummer.

Here a couple of close up head shots of those Splash girls. Do you still like #2's head better?

Pullet #1 (the one you didn't care for as much)

Pullet #2 (she just so happens to have a nice wide open tail

Kim, the head is fine on both Pullets it is just in the full pictures on entire picture the #2 pullet is just so much more balanced, her back width and angle is super. The tails do not show to be close to the same. #2 appears to have more of an open tail and the angle is very good. I would single mate these pullets and see what happens.

Barb~ How is your broody and those chickers?

Elisha~ How are your chicks doing?

Absolutely fabulous, pink! Thanks for asking!!

They are just coming up on 8 weeks old now. Naima finished mothering them between 6 and 7 weeks. She is back to laying now. But the babies are wickedly independent so it hasn't been an issue for them at all. Debbi was right on - I did luck out and ended up with 2 pullets (blue and splash) and a cockerel (blue). The cockerel is VERY exciting. He has fabulously feathered legs which he inherited from his mom and he looks VERY nice so far (hopefully, he gets his daddy's type and colour) so he may very well be replacing his clean-legged daddy. The blue pullet is also VERY nice so far. (I love the splash as well as yard candy but she is clean legged as expected. Both her parents are clean legged.)

I have 7 more Blue/Black Copper Marans eggs under another broody due to hatch next weekend. I can only hope I do as well with those ones!!!!
