Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Can you folks take a look at one of my hens? I just picked her up last night from a woman who had 3 of these. She says they are BCM. I have 2 BCM pullets at home but they look quite a bit different from her. I am mostly wondering about the copper lacing on her chest and the SUPER feathery feet. I tracked down where she came from this morning and talked to the woman on the phone for a bit. She says she ordered BCM hatching eggs from someone in Virginia and then crossed those birds with a BCM roo she bought up in Boise. I'm just wondering as far as breed standard goes, does this girl fit the criteria? She almost looks like a Black Sex Link hen, but those don't have feathered feet. Opinions anyone?

This happens sometimes in some lines of Marans and IMO, is caused from perhaps Wheatens genetics or possibly another variety of Marans genetics in the background.

IMO and please understand this is only my personal opinion, I would not use this female for breeding purposes if breeding to SOP as it will breed forward and will be a hardy chore to try and breed out. Hope this helps and hope others will also comment. :)

Thank you for the reply! Kind of what I figured. She was only $5 so I figured it couldn't hurt to bring her home and do some research at that price. Supposedly she lays a nice dark egg so at the very least she will make a cute addition to our laying flock. Hopefully others will comment also, I'd like to hear more opinions about where the lacing comes from.

Well I had a few Marans eggs I hatched and today I found one that looks very much like a splash

I have never hatched a home grown Splash Copper Marans before

That means my blue copper pullets have been laying for a few weeks now..... I will make sure tomorrow... it was still fluffing when I left. Very silvery with some darker patches

Kim, I culled all of the lighter leg Marans two year ago as I thought the the rewards were not worth all the culls involved. I like the color of leg on this male. The light leg acceptance by Marans group was added at the last minute, I want none of it here.
once again, i'm catching up - curious about what you mean by "here."

the SOP calls for slate over pink...(lighter legs??) - are you proposing petitioning the APA to chage it?

I think Don just meant on his property when he said "here"...
At least that was the way I took it.

I think there were previous discussions on what shade of slate the birds should have. I think Don is in the Dark Slate camp as opposed to a light slate...
Of course, I am only going my memory and don't mean to step on any toes by stepping in and answering
