Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

A blue to blue pairing I most often will do when I am satisfied with the tone of the blue on the pair. I don't like breeding blues that have too much varied tone of color as it is really easy to lose edging that way. Hope this makes sense. I've been up for a long time this morning already.

Got it! a blue x blue mating is best if you already have the lacing you are looking for...

I am going into lockdown tomorrow... Where is everyone?

Anyone else hatching this weekend?

More and More of my hens are coming back into lay. This was a long and rough molt for many of my hens. I've never seen so many walking pin chusions in my whole life! I still have one girl in full molt and others that have their feathers but aren't laying yet....

I don't know where everyone is....I was wondering the same thing. What do you have hatching this weekend?

I have handful of delawares, another handful of BCM, and too many buff leghorns.
A little bit of leghorn goes a long way, if you know what I mean LOL...

I have a pen of marans that I want to hatch from, but they haven't started back laying yet. When they start laying, I will FILL the incubator with their eggs.

I have another batch of eggs that are on Day 7. They are delawares and BCM - - - NO LEGHORNS in that incubator...

I had a very small clutch of eggs hatch a couple of weeks ago. I had TWO buff leghornsin that hatch. They are super high maintenance. They have a heat lamp, food, water, everything a chick could want. Yet, these two little ones are chirpers. They chirp until I pick them up. Tonight. I folded a towel in half on my lap. I put the two chirping chicks in the folds of the towel. They quickly quieted down and went to sleep. TWO hours later, they were still happily napping on my lap. That is a little too high maintenance for me. Never had to coddle my other breeds like this... I hope all this coddling pays off and they are not super flighty like their parents....

haha....I wouldn't be taking any bets on the leghorns if I were you....I've never really been around any that don't have that flighty streak in them. Just part of the breed.
Sounds like you are indeed into full swing with hatching season down your way! Can't wait to see pictures once you get going on the Marans!

I have another batch of eggs going into lockdown tomorrow or Friday and hatching Sunday. I don't remember what else is in that batch.... I know mostly Marans. My hatches are really about the same breeds right now, so I can have some choices in a few months.
