Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Vicki~
Here is one photo and please ignore the glare of the feet I had to use flash for the photos. Still trying to load the other cockerel.

He is larger and does not have white in the wing tip. I fear that the other one with the lighter legs, will not molt out the white in the wing tip, it's just not changing as I have experienced in the past with my other Marans. This guy also has a better topline and a more open tail. The other cockerel has, what looks to me like a pinched tail and he is a pretty narrow bird.

Here is the other one.......not my favorite at all.

They will be 6 mos. old on January 2. By the looks of this pullets comb, I should be expecting eggs pretty soon. :ya

Are both those shots of the male, the same male? Can't wait to see the other one to compare. I have a male I really like, but has a bit of the goldy cream color on the wing bow. I'm going to be test mating him tho because I like nearly everything else about him. I don't know if I have any pics of him or not, but can try one of these days. Just gotta get christmas shopping done first, then time for baking!

These are both of the males. The one I like is the first one photo'd. The second one is the one that I do not like and has the white in the wing tip, also the narrow body.

I would love to see your guy.

That stinks Lisa! I totally know how you feel, being so excited to see how the Marans eggs are coming along and then finding nothing. Hope you have a good hatch with the rest of your eggies tho! When do you think you'll put in your next batch of Marans eggs?
They are already going in a second incubator LOL.... I looked at them yesterday, but they are not old enough yet for me to ABSOLUTELY call them fertile or not :)

I did find a picture...I forgot I had taken it a few weeks back before the weather changed. He didn't particularly like being penned up, even for a few minutes, so is not standing like usual. He has a nice tail set and is really open, both of which, when he is relaxed gives a much better back length. While he is not perfect, do believe he will make a really good breeder as he carries aspects that will bring improvements to the birchens that I need. He is nice and beefy as well, which I will never say no to. haha Oh, and a really nice colored eye. With the silver girls I have running around, I shouldn't have trouble getting rid of the gold on the wing bow in the male offspring. Just look at those street sweepers! His legs are not a super dark color but a darker shade of slate, so should be able to work with him

It was really blowing here today, how did you guys up north do? It was sleeting a little and SNOW while I was shopping. That was not in the forecast.....
We ended up with around 18 inches of snow and spent Thursday night and most of Friday helping my DH remove snow( we have a snow removal route that he does), he went back out this morning to finish up. Thanks goodness for great neighbors- 1 that lives next to us watched our 2 boys over night and a good part of friday, DD elected to come with and help out when she could. The other neighbor came and did chicken & rabbit chores for us yesterday morning on really short notice.

Our cuckoo hens are laying daily and I will be adding them to the eggs we are collecting. We hope to start incubating next week Thursday

sorry, ran to take a shower to warm up. The Silvers are a mutation out of the Cuckoos. Here's a pic of one of my pullets. Not a great shot, but gives you an idea

here's the first eggs out of them, they've gotten a nicer tone and richness to them since these. So, am thinking its a good start for a rare color

What do the males look like if you have pictures? Nice egg color- I have some close in color from my cuckoos.
