so cull that cockeral and then see what the other 2 throw with the 4 hens they are with- best way would be to test mate each girl against each boy so I can tell who might be throwing them......pen space is at a premium until DH finishes putting the one in the garage back together- could make it into 2 pens for now with a trio in each.I'd breed away from it
sounds like a plan. When I had the cuckoos I had the ones with the birchen influence come out every so often and just didn't use them for breeding and it worked out fineso cull that cockeral and then see what the other 2 throw with the 4 hens they are with- best way would be to test mate each girl against each boy so I can tell who might be throwing them......pen space is at a premium until DH finishes putting the one in the garage back together- could make it into 2 pens for now with a trio in each.
then that is what I will go with, we were planning to cull him anyway as he is lowest in the group and isn't what I am looking for. I am hoping when I set eggs that I will get some that develop as it seems atleast 1 boy is doing his job or atleast tryingsounds like a plan. my bigger concern is with the breeds that my DD uses for her fair projects and that we can get enough hatched out early enough so they have time to grow before fair. Since my cuckoo are at project stage it's not as critialI hear ya, I'm hoping the same thing for when i start collecting and setting eggs
yeah, same here for the early shows....I didn't do any fall hatching, so don't know if I'll have anything other that older birds ready in timemy bigger concern is with the breeds that my DD uses for her fair projects and that we can get enough hatched out early enough so they have time to grow before fair. here for fair, anything hatched before Jan 1st is considered cock and hen, after Jan 1st can be shown as cockeral and pullet. Our eggs seem to hatch a day or 2 early so if we do a NYD hatch we have to set eggs accordingly.yeah, same here for the early shows....I didn't do any fall hatching, so don't know if I'll have anything other that older birds ready in time
I don't blame ya for being beat...that's a lot of work doing snow removal. I need to do some baking, but somehow have convinced myself that I'm going to do it after dinner.here for fair, anything hatched before Jan 1st is considered cock and hen, after Jan 1st can be shown as cockeral and pullet.
